Subtitles section Play video Print subtitles What is the secret of comedy? Well, it's pretty simple - there is no secret. There's no secret of comedy. If you can laugh, then you can write comedy. And not only that, then you can deliver comedy. If you can laugh, you can be a comedian. In fact even if you can't laugh and you find the world a bleak and terrible place, you're probably a very good comedian because to be a comedian you don't have to be the life of the party. You don't have to be the person who is always cracking jokes. You don't have to be outgoing and gregarious. Really, you just need to be yourself. And if you think about all the great comedians in the world you've got Woody Allen - he's not a happy and popular guy. He probably got bashed up at school. Tina Fey - she wasn't popular at school either. Or in Australia you've got Charlie Pickering - Charlie was not the king of the football team. Being funny is just about talking to an audience about the way you see the world. And you see the world in a way that nobody else can see the world. It's your own, so as soon as you start thinking funny and writing it down - if you have a funny idea just write it in a little notepad - before you know it you'll be saying things that are amusing to an audience. Don't worry if you're shy, don't worry if you're quiet, don't worry if nobody ever laughs at your jokes. You just stand there and see the world your own way. Oh, and one more thing. There's only one rule in comedy - the punchline goes at the end.
