  • G:Hello, I'm Gav.

  • D:I'm Dan.

  • G:We're the slow mo guys and you may have noticed it's the middle of the night.

  • G:What does that mean Dan?

  • D:Well usually, when we're filming we use the sun to light our subject,

  • D:But today our subject creates its own light,

  • D:So it's better to do in the dark.

  • G:Don't even need the sun. And because it's Texas, in the summer,

  • G:we're stood out here at 1:00 in the morning in shorts and a t-shirt.

  • D:Still sweaty.

  • G:Still sweaty.

  • G:This video is sponsored by Google, and to help us make it we're gonna be using the Google pixel 3A XL.

  • G:You'll find out more about it in a bit.

  • D:We've done a video before where I was spinning wire wool...

  • G:Yeah.

  • D:...in the night

  • G:And I thought how do we escalate that and I thought, 'how do we escelate that'?

  • G:And I thought, we've got two arms.

  • G:But why stop at two, when you've also got two legs?

  • D:So then I thought that's just me spinning around and there's a machine that does that already. Yeah, yeah. Me just going like this.

  • G:So you found a machine with four limbs? \

  • D:Yeah! Funny that, it's a shop fan... that I've...

  • D: hooked up here and taken the outside off of.

  • G:This is comical and, uh, I'll be honest...

  • G:we have not tested this in the slightest.

  • D:No idea if it's gonna work

  • G:Absolutely none.

  • D:I think we should just plug it in and see what happens.

  • G:That's probably for the best.

  • G:All right. Uh..

  • G:It's a dangerous one. Don't try this at home.

  • G:What've you got safety-wise?

  • D:Well because we're obviously dealing with sort of burning metal sparks...

  • D:I'm gonna put this fireproof suit on- a fire resistant suit on- to help me protect me from the heat,

  • D:as well as a balaclava, and some gloves...

  • D:...and some goggles, so that the sparks can't find their way to my skin.

  • G:I said balaclava to an American recently and they thought it was some kind of dessert.

  • D:Baclava?

  • [Laughter]

  • D:What do you mean?

  • G:I will also be in a protective suit because I'm actually probably more in the line of fire than you are.

  • D:You actually are, because the wire wool is gonna be spinning away from me into you.

  • G:Yeah.

  • D:I think I remember last time we were doing this, I was fine and you were just like *ah! ah! ah! ah! ah!*

  • G:[Chuckles] This is raining down on my head!

  • G:So first of all, Dan's just gonna spin it on his hand again, like last time, there's a little refresher,

  • G:and I'm gonna use the...pixel's...

  • G: 'night sight' feature

  • G:Because I've heard it has great low-light capability, for a still, almost like a long exposure.

  • G:So we'll see if I can see him once we turn this light off.

  • G:Are you ready? Feeling ready?

  • D:I'm feeling pretty ready.

  • G:Alright.

  • G:It's gonna be so... bloody dark.

  • D:It really is.

  • D:Oh my god.

  • D:Oh! [laughs]

  • G:Okay, go for it.

  • G:It's lovely!

  • G:Still works well.

  • D:Yeah, it does. Look at that. That is cool.

  • D:I've always wanted to get pictures like that with my phone, always!

  • D:I've never been able to.

  • D:It looks like a I'm a human Catherine Wheel.

  • G:For this subject, as we learned last time ,we are going to film it in a slightly different way to usual,

  • G:with a lower frame rate,

  • and a very high shutter angle as big as we can get without 359 degrees.

  • G:So that each frame will be full of motion blur, and those streaks will be as long as possible.

  • G:If we did a higher shutter speed...

  • G:180 like where we usually are,

  • G:Our trails will be cut in half, and if we go all the way up to a thousand frames a second,

  • G:there won't be trails, they'll be dots.

  • G:You've got like an 80 foot shadow behind you

  • G:That's pretty cool. Alright, you ready?

  • D:Turn the light off!

  • G:Lights off!

  • G:Whoa!

  • D:Aah!

  • G: You all right?

  • G:Woah!

  • D:Was that good?

  • G:Yeah, that look class! Did it speed up once they all flew off?

  • D:[chuckling] Yeah!

  • G:[laughs]

  • G:Ohh, That's class!

  • D:Wow. You can see the bits flying off and then landing on stuff.

  • D:There's no way that I could achieve that as a person.

  • G:Well, you don't have enough arms.

  • D:No, I don't. That's true.

  • D:A-as they kept flying off it was like *Dan making weird fan noises*

  • D:And it kept, like moving around like it was heavier at certain points. Then I was like, oh god, it's like...

  • G:Woah! Look at that bit!

  • G:There's just one throwing everything there.

  • D:They take turns, dont they?

  • G:Yeah.

  • G:Little bit nervous about this one.

  • D:Oh, me too.

  • D:You'll be alright.

  • G:Will I?

  • D:I'm just prancing because I can't see anything you don't to step on any rocks. There it is.

  • D:We're ready?

  • G:Yeah.

  • G:Ooh, bloody hell.

  • *Gav getting hurt by the sparks*

  • G:God, its so painful!

  • G:Okay, that really hurts.

  • D:Does it really?

  • G:It's peppering my legs, like it's going straight through the suit!

  • D:Really?

  • G:Yeah!

  • D: It it very temporary, though?

  • G:Oh, yeah, it's like a bunch of tiny knives!

  • G:Okay, bit of playback...

  • D:Oh, Sick! It looks like I'm doing it with my hands.

  • G:Yeah, looks like, you've got, like, 'leet toy skills.

  • D:You know, yeah that's cool, [inaudible]

  • G: [chuckling] And it's me getting peppered!

  • D:Hold the camera steady, for goodness sake. Not that I was trying to get you or anything,

  • D: but I was definitely trying to get you.

  • G:Yeah, we're so really going for a Dutch angle here. That's what I wanted.

  • D:Oh, yeah, yeah...

  • G:I was thinking Battlefield Earth.

  • D:It was a stylistic choice.

  • G:Yeah, yeah...

  • D: Of course.

  • G:[Inaudible] All these ones they're going below camera. It's just peppered me in the crotch area.

  • D:I don't think I even need safety gear for this.

  • G:Augh.

  • G:Look at that one, it blasted the bottom of the lens- the bottom- like, hit the hood.

  • [Gav and Dan making swooshing noises]

  • G: I wonder if I could be under there with you, do you think I'd be alright?

  • D:Oh, you'd be fine.

  • D:I mean they're only danger is these huge globs of falling fire...

  • G:But if I was just at your legs, looking up at you?

  • D:Oh that would work

  • G:That would be alright, I wouldn't it?

  • D:That would work.

  • G:What is going on?

  • D:If hold it up like this.

  • G:It's about 3:00 in the morning, and I'm on my back in a quarry.

  • [Dan chuckles]

  • D:Ready?

  • G:Yep.

  • G:Whoa!

  • G:Oh, my god!

  • D: Oh, Man!

  • G: Aah! Where am I!?

  • [Dan chuckles]

  • D:Looks like i'm holding up a... plate of doom.

  • [Gav laughs]

  • There was a couple of eh...

  • G: You're havin' a whale of a time!

  • D: Yeah, I'm loving it

  • G:There was a couple of sparks that went down on to you, I was watching.

  • D:It's like I'm showering you from like, fireworks or something.

  • G:Look at you, having so much fun.

  • D: I was having fun!

  • G:Look how safe it is under there.

  • D:It's perfect. I didn't get any sparks on you at all.

  • D:It's all going away from me and I'm protected by the wood if something did- did just drop.

  • G:Yeah.

  • G:We're really attracting a lot of bugs!

  • D:Well, we've got a huge big light.

  • G:It's true.

  • D:And there's no moon or any other light source.

  • [Gav laughs]

  • G:All right, what you gonna do this time?

  • D:I'm gonna spin it around in all kinds of directions, just go a bit nuts with it

  • G:Balaclava back on.

  • D:Balaclava in that back on because it's going everywhere.

  • D:Bloody hell.

  • G:Really kicked off at the end there.

  • D:It really did!

  • Some went miles away, look.

  • G:Those ones that end up directly coming towards the camera they end up so big those little flares.

  • D:Yeah, they just smash towards the camera.

  • D;They're dropping right in front of it, look, and then like some of them I think I aim directly at you at one point,

  • D:it was just sparks flying straight at you.

  • G:That's cool when it goes behind you and you're just a silouette.

  • D:Yeah that is cool, like I'm back lit by the sparks.

  • G:What about this:

  • G:We'll take the pixel that Google lovingly sent us,

  • G:and ape it on to the fan

  • G:Facing out get a crazy shot sort of POV blade

  • G:of all the sparks shooting at us.

  • D:Do they want this phone back or...?

  • G:We might be able to give it back in one piece.

  • D:Okay. Well, let's try it.

  • G:Ooh, dear.

  • G:Is it a bit uh... bit wobbly?

  • D:Yeah, super woobly, look.

  • G:Well, jostle it around!

  • D:It stayed on the fan. I tilted it down slightly so I could get more of the um

  • D:The metal foiling.

  • G:It looks like a plain wing.

  • Both:WOAH!

  • G:The sound effect is perfect as well, you don't need to do any [inaudible] it's just amazing.

  • G:You know at old sci-fi movies where it's like oh, you know go to warp speed all the stars like *weird noise* that's like from the side window

  • G:Thats the angle. did you hear the rattling of the fan going *dk dk dk dk*?

  • That was when it was like getting up some *serious* speed.

  • G:I think we got some...

  • G:magnificent looking footage there.

  • D:I just have to call to attention the fact that you're wearing your safety gear around your ankles like you're about to go to the toilet.

  • G:Well They can't see- I saw right before I started filming, I just sort of went

  • G:I peeled off but I'm just stood in the dread, now.

  • D:Could you imagine what it looks like when a man takes his trousers off and

  • D:Like puts them on the toilet

  • D:looks like that!

  • G: Ijust thought I could get away with it until you called it out.

  • G:I think we got some really nice-looking footage. I really love the dome...effect.

  • D:It made a big difference because usually I had the one,

  • D:but with this I had four and the sparks were in all directions.

  • I much preferred four. It was like a solid sheet, 360 sheet of sparks. Thought was wonderful.

  • G:Big old thanks to Google for sponsoring this video had a lot of fun using the pixel 3A XL

  • G:I was very impressed by the 'night sight' mode. I don't know how it works, but...

  • G:It must use stabilization to take the long exposure.

  • G:I've only ever done long exposure on tripods because doing this you'd get this

  • G: all blurring the whole thing is somehow stabilizes.

  • G:One thing I noticed: the darker of the picture is the longer it takes to take an image.

  • G:So there's some some cool tech going on there. don't know how that works...

  • D:Someone smarter than you has worked that out...

  • G:There's some time in.

  • D:I also like the fast charging and I plugged it in when we first got it,

  • D:it told me how long it was gonna take and it said 'charging rapidly,' or 'charging fast,'

  • D:and it was just super quick

  • G:We've got a second channel. Subscribe to that one, subscribe to this one. There's a bell, hit us up on the socials.

  • G:Anything else?

  • D:Yeah, I'm gonna start trying to fill up Google and just... taking pictures and recording everything now.

  • G:We'll see you in the next video.

G:Hello, I'm Gav.
