(R) So... Jun and I got tagged in the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge.

(R) This is to raise money for Lou Gehrig's Disease.

(R) What happens is, if you get tagged and you don't do the Ice Bucket Challenge, you have to donate a hundred dollars,

(R) and if you do do the Ice Bucket Challenge you only have to donate ten.

(R) Jun and I are still living apart right now, so we're gonna be doing it separately, and we'll each donate our ten dollars after this,

(R) and, I have my grandpa here today, who is going to be helping me and dumping me with ice,

(R) and he's gonna be doing the Ice Bucket Challenge with me too!

(R) Grandma can't believe he's doing this!

(R) It gives you information on exactly what Lou Gehrig's Disease is.

(R) ALS, or Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, is a neurodegenerative disease where your motor neurons degenerate to the point of causing muscle atrophy and difficulty breathing, speaking and swallowing.

(R) In 90% of cases, the cause is unknown. There's no cure, and treatment only extends survival time for a few years to a few months.

(R) Once diagnosed, the expected survival time is only three to five years.

(R) It's named after Lou Gehrig, the American son of German immigrants who rose out of a life of poverty

(R) to become a record-setting Major League Baseball first baseman. In 1938, he slowly became ill, and in 1939 he was diagnosed with ALS.

(R) He died in 1941, at only 37 years old.

(R) The money you donate goes towards global research projects focusing on understanding and treating the disease.

(R) You can donate to the cause on their website. If you live in an area with a water shortage, they even give you recommendations for other ways you can help raise awareness.

(R) We're donating forty dollars, thirty from me, Jun and my grandpa, and ten from my grandma we didn't challenge, but who wanted to help anyway.
