in a fully staged production.

the great final monument of the 20th century.

Of course the Philharmonic now has

a tradition of presenting fully staged operas.

JAAP VAN ZWEDEN: We really laugh.

Pieces where all the art comes together.

Acting, of course the singing, staging,

and we work with phenomenal people

and very inspiring people.

INTERVIEWER: The production will be

directed by Claire van Kampen, who is also

a pianist, composer, early music specialist, and playwright

of the Tony nominated Farinelli and The King.

CLAIRE VAN KAMPEN: I'm looking at chess

as a kind of overall metaphor for where we are.

The New York Philharmonic will be onstage

so therefore the orchestra has a very powerful role to play.
