  • Hey Geograpeeps, welcome back to Flag / Fan Friday. Hope you liked the Ireland episode, alright,

  • I'm just gonna quickly address it: yes, I accidentally said Liverpool when I meant Glasgow.

  • And I accidentally said salsa when I meant tango, I'll own up to it. So anyway, yeah, it was really fun filming that episode,

  • we literally flew pots, Peadar out here from Ireland.

  • He actually made the very first blood of those who fought for their country

  • animation in the Colombia episode and for the longest time he's like I gotta be in the Ireland episode,

  • I'm like okay, but anyway all that stuff aside. Let's talk about the flag and stuff, shall we? Without further ado!

  • [Flag Friday intro]

  • You know what's funny? I actually brought pots to the Conor McGregor-Mayweather fight

  • and he was wearing this flag and people wanted to take a picture with him,

  • he got his little 15 minutes of fame. Anyway the flag! The Irish Flag or the

  • ''Bratach na hEireann'' is a vertical tricolor of green, white and orange. The flag was actually presented as a gift from a group of French women

  • sympathetic to the Irish cause to Irish Nationalist Leader Thomas Francis Meagher. Yeah like literally half those letters

  • don't even make a sound. ''Maaar''. Anyway in the most technical terms the green represents the older Gaelic tradition as well as Irish republicanism,

  • the orange represents the minority whom supported protestant King William II (correction: William III), who was of the house of Orange,

  • sometimes referred to as William the Orange whom defeated the last Catholic king of England, Scotland and Ireland,

  • James II and the white symbolizes the peace between the two people groups,

  • BUT even though it's kind of unofficial most Irish people probably just say the green represents the Catholics, the orange the Protestants,

  • the white peace between them all. DONE! Prior to the tricolor the Irish actually used a variety of different banners either

  • regionally or nationalistically or defiantly against the British. The greenfield and harp confederacy flag, it was a St. Patrick's cross flag,

  • then there was the three crowns for the Lordship of Ireland, also keep in mind the four historical provinces Connacht, Munster, Leinster

  • and Ulster each have their own flags often used in sporting matches and cultural events. Connacht looks pretty cool

  • It's kind of like half bird, half armor armed with sword. Also

  • you can see that the flag of Northern Ireland which belongs to the UK was based off of the historic flag of Ulster, however speaking

  • of harps we go to the coat of arms. Pretty simple!

  • The image is just a golden Irish or Gaelic harp with silver strings laid out on a blue shield. This image goes way back to

  • the 13th century. Nobody can say exactly why the gold harp is affiliated with Ireland

  • but many attribute it to the harp that king David played it in the Bible.

  • So basically it's all about history, provinces, religion and defiance. DONE! So now you know what that means:

  • GEOGRA-FANMAIL TIME!!! Honestly like there's so much every week more mails

  • just keep coming in. I don't even have a million subscribers, but there's too many things I can't open them all here

  • but I'll try to do as much as I can. Aah this is from Ignatios from Greece. Okay? This is the second time

  • wow, it tastes like liquorice! Nathan from Pittsburgh: ''When I was a senior in college

  • I started my own eco-friendly packets of hair gel for everyday use especially for traveling. It's called pocket gel!

  • I'm not gonna lie to you. I don't really use hair gel that much I usually use a wax. I'll see you,

  • I'll try this. My hair doesn't really do well with gel, anyway

  • but phsss How do I look? Boost that's literally his name, Boost from Thailand

  • Barby: Yes, I am.

  • sent you a keychain and a mug of my hometown which is called

  • Alanya. My best friend is a Greek Cypriot whom I met in the UK and we realized we are more closer than we thought. Today

  • we only fight about who owns

  • Loukoumades, our dessert ha ha''. And finally Bradley from Australia.
