  • This is the lock picking lawyer, and last week in video number 10 44 I opened a gun safe with a fork.

  • Well, apparently, that didn't impress quite a few of you who challenged me in the comments to open one with a spoon.

  • Now I was skeptical that any gun safe was that bad.

  • But it seems that fate really wanted to see this happen, because the very next one I evaluated could indeed be opened with a spoon.

  • This is a stack on model P C 17 02 R F I d.

  • Gun safe.

  • It's designed to be opened with either a key, a code or an R F i D credential.

  • It's also a product with several critical vulnerabilities.

  • The first is a mechanical backup lock that is a breakable wafer design.

  • Second is the fact that that lock is set into a plastic housing, which means it can probably be turned by brute force.

  • And finally, like many similar products, the button that allows you to program a new code or register a new R F I D tag is not well protected.

  • It's right next to the gap between the housing and the lid.

  • Now, it was this flaw I was first attempting to exploit when I discovered that all you need to open this was a spoon.

  • I had inserted a wedge in this gap to see if I could deflect the lid enough to expose the button.

  • And when I did that, the lid popped right open.

  • Now I'll take this apart to show you the design flaw that permits that toe happen.

  • But first, for all of you who wanted to see me open a lock with a spoon.

  • Here you go.

  • Okay, let's take this apart.

  • Now.

  • There are three screws that allow us to remove this plastic cover.

  • Okay, Now that we have this apart, we should be able to see the flaws.

  • Clearly, there's two plates here that should interact with each other on the edge.

  • However, there is enough slop in this mechanism that they have overlapped each other.

  • If I pull this back, we should be able to see it a little bit more clearly.

  • There we go.

  • Look at all that slop in the mechanism for something like this.

  • That slop is inexcusable.

  • In any case, that's all I have for you today.

  • If you do have any questions or comments about this, please put them below.

  • And, as always, have a nice day.

  • Thank you.
