  • today's question is a lengthy one it's just about two letters it's how do I say

  • y sound versus the j sound this is particularly difficult for my Spanish

  • speakers so let's go ahead and jump right in

  • we have two sounds and two letters here we have the ysound and the j

  • sound so let's just talk about the two sounds for the y sound let's look at

  • my lips first my lips are a little more pulled back y y almost like I am

  • in a smile compared to the j sound or my lips are going to be rounded so

  • that's tip number one tip number two what do we do with your tongue for the

  • y sound you are not going to touch the tip of your tongue to your teeth at all

  • the tip of your tongue this part right here does not touch your teeth if this

  • sound is particularly difficult for you you can think about touching the sides

  • of your tongue right there to the insides of the top teeth y y y

  • that is compared to the j sound where you are going to touch the tip of your

  • tongue to the back of your top front teeth to start and then it's going to

  • pull back into the middle of the mouth the sides of the tongue do not touch the

  • teeth I'm only talking about the tip of the tongue it's going to touch the back

  • of the teeth and then pull back so let's try those two sounds we have y y

  • y I'm not touching the tip of my tongue to my teeth now I'm going to

  • touch the tip of my tongue to my teeth J J J and then pay attention to

  • the lips we have the Y sound y y y

  • and J J J so now let's try it in some words let's start with the y

  • first we have yellow yellow yellow yawn yawn yawn and remember we're not going

  • to say that W sound here it's not yound so that's just another little bonus tip

  • for you yolk yolk yolk another bonus tip we do

  • not say the L yell yell yell and yes yes yes

  • now we're going to touch the teeth with the tip of the tongue jell-o jell-o

  • jell-o John John John joke joke joke gel gel gel

  • Jess Jess Jess now let's contrast the two yellow jello John yawn yolk joke gel

  • yell yes and Jess so give it a try people are going to notice the
