Hi everyone Jennifer from Tarle speech with your pronunciation question today
we have three words breathe to inhale or exhale breath
one little inhalation or exhalation and brief a short period of time so let's
go ahead and look at these words we have breath breathe and brief the beginning
of the words that br combination are the same so to do this think about
saying the R sound before you even start the word get your tongue in the right
spot for that R sound and then you're going to put your lips together and then
open them as you're saying the R sound for breath
this is super helpful because if you don't do that and you're not ready for
that R sound I will hear people say bah-r and then you add an extra syllable to
the word and it would sound like bah-reath instead of breathe so again think
about that R sound again your tongue can to be pointed down or tipped back just
don't touch your teeth say the B sound as you're ready for the R sound BR
BR okay now let's tackle the endings to really
where the confusion in these words lie for breath we have the short e and then
the voiceless th so for the voiceless th our throat is not vibrating so that
sound is going to be softer so we have eh-th for the th sound you're going to
stick your tongue out of your mouth and do not touch your teeth now to get
super technical the back of your teeth can the back teeth may touch your tongue
but when I tell people to do that inevitably someone then flattens their
whole tongue to the top teeth and then nothing comes out so to make this sound
think about not touching your teeth breath
breath breath what we want is we want that air to be moving continuously out
of the mouth for that th and no voice on for that breath now on to the word
breathe we have that long e that smiling vowel the key here is to make that vowel
long e breathe then as you see what I just did there I'm going to stick my
tongue out of my mouth again try not to touch your teeth that stops the air keep
the tongue away from the teeth and out of the mouth let the air move over your
tongue and your voice is going to be on breathe breathe
that voicing is more important than most people think because not just the vowel
here gives us some length but when you have that voiced sound it actually
sounds like that previous vowel is longer so don't forget the voicing and
it's super key here so we have breath and breathe breath breathe lastly for
the word brief this mistake comes from the fact that people aren't sticking
their tongue out of their mouth enough for the th so what happens is it sounds
like a F and to make an F sound your tongue is in your mouth your lips are
slightly open and the air just keeps coming out some people gently bite the
bottom lip for this sound so we have long e here brief brief brief
breathe breathe breathe breath breath breath breath breathe brief brief
breath breathe I have to look at my sentence for you take a brief moment to
breathe taking shallow breaths will help to calm
you down give it a try I know people are going to notice the difference if you
