Paris is a culinary capital and a city best visited on an empty stomach. Speaking of your stomach, I'm going to share five foods to try in Paris that will make you, and your stomach, very, very happy. 1. A CONE AT BERTHILLON If you spend long enough in Paris, someone is going to recommend you try ice cream at Berthillon... so, let it be me. I first had a cone there when I was in high school and was lucky enough to do a French course in Paris. It's such a special memory that I wanted to share it with Marc. Berthillon has been serving up some of the best known ice cream and sorbet in Paris since 1954. Some people even call it the best in the country. Its main location on Île Saint-Louis is the perfect place to take a break and enjoy your cone in the shadow of the great Notre-Dame Cathedral across the water. Good decision? Mmm. Oh! Whoa. 2. A SANDWICH AT CARACTÈRE DE COCHON This is a butcher slash deli that is all about that ham all the time. Inside the shop is tiny with room for just a handful of customers at a time. But these are happy customers, trust me. Do your taste buds a French favour and stop in here for a salted butter and cured ham sandwich. Wow, wow, wow, wow, wow! It's a great example of how simple really is best when the ingredients are fresh and high quality. Just bread, butter, and ham wrapped up in paper. Gross! 3. PRETTY MUCH ANYTHING AT ERIC KAYSER BAKERY Eric Kayser opened his first bakery in 1996. He was a trainer at the national baking and pastry-making institute for almost a decade before going into business. You can now find his bakeries and products all over the world, but it all started in Paris. We ducked into a shop to take a look. I didn't see the rose macarons at first - my personal favourite - so I asked and she gave me one to try! Dreams are coming true. Oh my god. It broke so she gave it to me. That's so nice. We wanted to sample a few different things so we got a ham and cheese bun which was oh-so-satisfying to sink your teeth into and macarons, of course. It's so good! And my personal pastry staple, yes you know we all have one, you do too, a pain au chocolat, which I order as often as possible when in Paris. 4. LE FIGOU Next stop brings us to a cheese shop - an excellent place to find oneself in Paris by the way - where our sights are set on a little parcel of joy called le figou. It's goat's cheese stuffed with fig jam. Cheese and jam is one of my favourite combinations ever, so this was something I really wanted to try. It's sometimes served as a dessert too. Finding myself with hunger pangs but without bread or a knife, I decided to just go for it in the street because I could not wait. It's just all goat's cheese. Is it good? It is good but I don't think I'm eating it right. I think you need a knife and some bread. Not just shoving a cheese ball in your mouth. Back at our Airbnb, we spread it onto slices of bread, which was obviously delicious too. 5. MACARONS AT PIERRE HERMÉ My friend recommended this place for macarons so we went to the shop to pick some out and...wow. There are plenty of luxurious flavours to choose from. We settled on jasmine and grapefruit because I usually go for fruity and milk chocolate and passionfruit because Marc usually goes for chocolatey. They wrap them up so beautifully in a little box that they feel more like gem stones than pastry. It's really soft. It's not crunchy like meringue normally is. It's really nice. The jasmine and grapefruit. Mmm. Having these macarons feels special and, because they only last a few precious bites, you really relish each mouthful. If you weren't hungry before this video, I think it's safe to assume you are now. Let me know in the comments which of these foods you most want to try.
