Subtitles section Play video Print subtitles everybody Jennifer from Tarle speech with your pronunciation question today's question is about two vowels when an L comes after them and it's the short e and the short I if the problem with these two vowels that they look very similar we're going to actually skip definitions today you can go ahead and Google those because I want to jump right in to the body of the lesson on how to pronounce all of these words you're going to learn six words today love it we have hill bill and fill hell bell and fell so let's start at the end of these words we have two letter L's ending the word but we're going to end these words with one L sound L and to do this touch the tip of your tongue to the back of your top front teeth and be sure to hold the tongue there for a second you want to make sure that you're holding your tongue there because the mistake that I hear is people pull it down or don't touch it at all and then it makes all of the vowels sound incorrect so make sure you get a nice L at the end of the word so it sounds like it is there L LL okay now what's the difference between these two vowels they look almost exactly alike and I'm going to say them and you can see this so we have ih eh ih eh ih eh now I'm exaggerating when I actually say these words bill Bell they look almost exactly the same so think about it this way for that short I sound and ill or fill bill and hill the tip of your tongue is going to be behind your top front teeth it is not touching and it's going to be flat il il il so your mouth is relatively closed but your mouth is open and your lips are very relaxed so again relaxed mouth slightly open and your tongue is going to be a little bit higher in your mouth behind the top front teeth it's not an e I hear that mistake sometimes it's a little more open a little more relaxed which allows the tongue to just pop down just a little tiny bit for ill ill ill now for the L ll you can't open your mouth quite a bit again it's going to be relaxed and your tongue is then going to move up but the mistake that I hear is that people open their mouth too much and when you open your mouth too much it might sound like you're actually saying al al and that's not what we're looking for we're looking for that nice el el el so here's my tip for you this is what I suggest that you do you are going to open your mouth enough so that the tip of your tongue and your flat tongue in your mouth will be able to point at you between your top and your bottom teeth so your teeth are slightly open and then you're going to make sure that your tongue is pointing at you between the top and the bottom teeth el el el this is different than ill ill ill so you can see for ill my mouth barely moves because my tongue is pretty high up there and then it just pops up to touch the teeth but for the eL el eL you can see my tongue and then it moves up there so I'm going to get slightly closer so we have ill ill ill el el el let's add these two words let's start with the ill hill bill fill and now to the eL hell Bell fell so we're going to contrast them hill hell bill bell fill fell let's go backwards fell fill bell bill hell hill now let's try a few sentences climbing the large hill was hell bill we can also use that as a man's name bill rang the bell and lastly be sure after you fill the bag that nothing fell on the floor give it a try I know people are going to notice the difference if you found this helpful please give us a like please share it with all of your friends and don't forget to subscribe check out our products on Google Play and iTunes and visit us at Tarle speech if you're interested in one-on-one classes thanks so much I will see you again all soon buh-bye
