Subtitles section Play video Print subtitles December is one of the most festive times of year to be in Fukuoka City, when the sun goes down, the lights go up, and the spirit of Christmas fills the air. Whether you're visiting with friends, family, or a loved one, there's sure to be a Christmas holiday event that fits your style. So we're here at the Hakata Christmas Market. This is the fourth year, I think? The fourth year that the Christmas Market has been held here in Hakata, and every year it just gets better, there's so much to do, so much to eat, so much to see! And now there's music. Live music! So, let's check it out, let's have fun together! With live music and entertainment, sizzling hot street food, hot chocolate and hot wine, this German inspired Christmas Market in front of Hakata Station is a great place to drop by to grab a bite of food or listen to some music before catching your train home. The stalls are often staffed by foreign language students, giving the entire market an international and multicultural feel. Got some hot chocolate and some chocolate! The most interesting part of the christmas market for me though, are the souvenir stalls. This Christmas Market imports traditional and handmade Christmas decorations from Europe, bringing a bit of authenticity to the Japanese Christmas tradition. Many of the souvenirs here are things I had often grown up with, but for many Japanese, they are seeing them for the first time. These are so cool! They have, like, Christmas scented incense cones. That'll be nice. Local artists from Fukuoka are also selling their own handmade Christmas ornaments here. Definitely stop by Hakata Station if you're looking for a fusion of Japanese and Western Christmas culture. Meanwhile, on the other side of the city, there's Tenjin, the popular shopping restaurant district. Here you can also enjoy the Christmas Market--but don't be fooled. Although it is, the same German Christmas Market, there are a few subtle differences that separate it from the one at Hakata. The first difference, is the crowd. Hakata is a transit station, and Tenjin is more of a lifestyle area. Instead of attracting salarymen and singles on their way to the station, Tenjin definitely feels more “family friendly”, with Santa statues, and glowing christmas trees decorating the area. Another difference? Well, the food is slightly different here too. If you're feeling homesick for some Christmas turkey, then you're going to want to stop by Tenjin! There's no way to look good eating a turkey drumstick. Oh, but don't worry, it's not completely different, you can still get the Christmas Market's signature hot wine here too, wuth a limited edition mug to take home when you are done. So good. And if you're looking for a place nearby to take a break, Keigo Park is a great place to visit as well. Normally a gathering spot for young locals, it's a popular place to sit and take a break from all the excitement in the city. During the holiday season, they also have an ice skating rink in the park. This is a great people-watching spot, and if you want to be surrounded by people without being overwhelmed, Keigo park is the place to go. Finally, my personal favourite place to visit during this season is Fukuoka Tower. There's something about the atmosphere here that is very calming. While it is a popular tourist spot, the holiday set up is so romantic, you'd have to have a heart made of stone to come here and not feel anything. From the top of the tower, you can watch the lights flicker across the vast cityscape, the halls are kept dark and are lit with candles, which really helps set the mood. It's hard not to be charmed by the atmosphere here, making it one of the most romantic spots in Fukuoka to bring a date. And if you're here to celebrate your love, you can do so by taking photos together, or by hanging a lock on the guard rails of the tower. So, if the Christmas Market is a little too busy, and you're looking for something more quiet, secluded, romantic, come to Fukuoka Tower. This is beautiful. I really wish I would come here like, on a date, but every year I come here by myself. Come hang out here! It's nice, romantic, kiss your favorite person, take selfies like this! You'll love it. So, for those of you who are planning on visiting Fukuoka this Christmas, I hope this helps. What would you say your style is? Where would you like to go?
