  • I go, Um, my my my daughter Esther plays in at Steady Buckets, which is Skills development program shutout Coach Mackey and Coach Lefty here in New York City.

  • And, um, she has outgrown her basketball sneakers, right?

  • She had she had this fresh pair of Jordans like with the newspaper clippings on it, right, like the red and black was Oh my God, it was so fresh.

  • But she's outgrown her favorite kicks.

  • Outgrown needs new basketball sneakers.

  • She's growing fast and we go online toe look, and I'm thinking, I want to get her a W MBA sneaker.

  • Why not like the storm had a great year.

  • They got a ton of great players.

  • Let me look.

  • Got any Sue Birds got in Brianna Stewart's?

  • No, they got super has one collab with with Kyrie Irving, I think, but like no, these W MBA players don't have their own sneakers out, and I'm thinking like selfishly because my daughter plays and I liked her toe, have fresh pair of kicks, and why not W MBA, right?

  • Why do I have to be MBA?

  • Um, but also it's like they're missing an opportunity.

  • There's money to be made what are the sneaker companies doing so?

  • I wanted to have you want to talk about it?

  • Just think what we could do about it.

  • All right, here's my answer.

  • First of all, your daughter is super dope.

  • Super cool.

  • One playing hoops, and I'm going to give her something special.

  • After we finish up here, I'll talk to you about that.

  • But you're You're right.

  • You know, being a professional women's basketball player, we are constantly compared to the men, and part of that comparison goes, spills over to the brand, right?

  • And, um, you know, I'm probably Team Adidas.

  • I was formerly Nike, then crossed over to three stripe life.

  • And we see a lot of the guys, whether it is my guy, Damian Lillard or Donovan Mitchell, um, that have their own shoes, which are super cool, and they do a great job of incorporating us, you know, as you know, Piers in the game.

  • Hey, like I'm making sure I'll amplify you wearing my shoe.

  • LeBron always repost when Sue was wearing his or Briana Stewart, which, by the way, I really appreciate you going back and acknowledging Briana Stewart concerning she was finals M v P.

  • and I know you talk about injuries and athletes coming back because your girl came back from Achilles to um oh, yeah, what?

  • I said just to let everyone know because I mentioned this on the radio show.

  • There's a couple weeks ago.

  • I said, You know, K D does not have great odds coming back.

  • Look, Tom Brady defied my cliff prediction, but he's the first one to play at this age at this level.

  • And I said athletes, I was being hyperbolic.

  • I did say at one point, like it's rare.

  • But I also said that they basically don't come back from an Achilles as the same player.

  • Um, and then some members of the Seattle Storm who, by the way, are loaded with all stars.

  • Uh, tweeted at me.

  • Hey, it's not true.

  • What about Briana Stewart?

  • So I was like, Oh, yeah, sorry, Right?

  • That actually she did.

  • And she just won finals M v p.

  • And she hasn't missed a beat, and she's averaging 26 points a game or whatever it is.

  • So yeah, so I e.

  • I appreciate you for, you know, standing in the line of fire and taking an understanding and moving the conversation forward, which is why we're here today and talking about your daughter.

  • But you're absolutely correct.

  • Women's basketball players do have an opportunity.

  • Hopefully, when they partner with sneaker brown brands to really, you know, have a shoe, it just this.

  • Why haven't we had one?

  • We talked about Cheryl Swoopes and how big that was for the culture.

  • But that was off of the heels of these.

  • Start the inauguration of the W N B A season.

  • Right, Um, coming off of that huge 96 Olympics where there was mo mentum for this new league and there was support and there was investment and then a couple years couple, you know, because we're about to turn 25 the W NBA years past and we've been on autopilot for very long time.

  • And I would even, you know, dare to say, up until this January 2020 where we finally ratified a new collective bargaining agreement, C b A.

  • That forced our partners to bet on women, and that was a motto to invest in women.

  • And a lot of people say, Oh, why I like you guys.

  • You guys don't want LeBron James, My name like No, no, no, you all are here in all the wrong parts.

  • We understand the economic realities of our league.

  • We just want you to understand that our perspective is needed now more than ever, and it actually can be by opening.

  • You know, your perspective, business wise to us amplifying us.

  • You're opening yourself to a perspective that has been neglected and can be profitable, and I'll run the half the population and the way that the population, which I'm glad you are helping you out in your household but like Mom's by shoes.

  • So when you show women that are strong and athletes who is controlling the discretionary income, the budget of the house so it's like this can Onley be a home run?

  • And that's why we're constantly in this conversation.

  • I think what people fail to understand, though, is that the business of a basketball shoe is taking a hit.

  • It's harder to sell those these days than it was before.

  • Unless you're like an icon, whether you're LeBron James or Michael Jordan, those shoes air good.

  • Those shoes are in the vault.

  • All these other exploratory shoes with different players and all that type of stuff.

  • It's harder to sell that now.

  • Yeah, but you know why?

  • Because there's too many ugly, like just make if you make up, See, this is my whole thing about and I listen, I know the sparks.

  • The spark sent my daughter some gear, but so let me just put that aside for a second.

  • People will buy the gear.

  • If it's fresh, you gotta make it fresh.

  • And that means you've got to spend money on bringing people in to design it, not just the player going, Yo, you know, it'd be dope.

  • Let me put this up here.

  • No, no, you're not a designer.

  • It looks It's wack, right?

  • Like make it fresh.

  • And by the way, if you make it fresh and you have some Briana Stewart like Jewell, Loyd and Alicia Clark were the ones who brought this to my attention.

  • But if you if you and and by the way, they're ballers there ballers but but then you have another level.

  • Like Sue Bird is an all time great and Briana Stewart is on another level right now.

  • If you had Briana Stewart and they were fresh e athletes, people would buy them boys and girls would buy them different culture, as young boys airmen are.

  • They wanna stunt with something different and having, like a pair of women, choose that they're rocking.

  • That's where our culture is moving and a lot of people sort of here.

  • WB air here, women's sports and sort of cringe.

  • Unfortunately, even though the numbers are moving in a different way, we have a lot of people that are advocating for us.

  • But, hey, men lie.

  • Women lie.

  • Well, guess what?

  • Numbers don't the 2020 W NBA Finals up 15% in a year like no other.

  • Right, Um, you look at the highest paid female athlete.

  • It's Naomi Osaka, someone that you know as by racial and has really taken the sports world by storm.

  • There are moments for young athletes and, you know, our commissioner in the WNBA's ah woman by the name of Cathy Engelbert dope.

  • She ran Deloitte for a while And speaking of Deloitte, um, always bring this up because they run the numbers on, you know, consulting and marketing and all that type of stuff.

  • And they came like in the industry of sports or, you know, the business of sports all those things that air tangential.

  • They predicted that the rise of women's sports was number one most profitable thing over E sports over sports betting just because because you're starting basically presenting and your and your you have an enormous market.

  • I want my daughters to be ableto place, um, ball and some W N B A kicks.

  • You know, like who should that be going?

  • I'm just getting naked, Okay?

  • Just getting I think right now there's a real moment for super because she comes up in the greatest of all time and there's a whole movement out there about keeps too fresh.

  • She's dope.

  • She's got, you know, the culture both ways, by the way, if we're going to talk about it.

  • Candace Parker.

  • She's an ultimate when she's absolutely where we've seen every possible like this success be possible.

  • Candace Parker had a P E drop these last few years.

  • W N b a Hoody sold out Diana Taurasi goat shirt sold out.

  • So there are things moving in a positive direction.

  • My, um, or a couple years ago, her shoe showed that sold out in minutes, kicks, kicks, kicks.

I go, Um, my my my daughter Esther plays in at Steady Buckets, which is Skills development program shutout Coach Mackey and Coach Lefty here in New York City.
