  • to the NFL draft because right now Mel Kiper and Todd McShay have put together a piece answering the 30 biggest questions heading into the 2021 draft.

  • And you could read it on ESPN dot com.

  • And we can talk about it here because Mel and McShay are with me live and they are ready to go.

  • Gentlemen outstanding to see you.

  • And one of the questions and the one that I think will be the most discussed leading up to the draft is Mel.

  • How big is the gap in your mind between the two quarterbacks at the top, Trevor Lawrence and Justin Fields?

  • There's a gap.

  • It's not a huge gap.

  • I'm talking about high school coming out.

  • Trevor Lawrence, Justin Fields one in one A.

  • And I think it would be one in one.

  • A.

  • Maybe had it not been for that Indiana game for just in the fields.

  • A few weeks ago, three interceptions was off his game.

  • Accuracy just didn't get in the rhythm.

  • They had The big lead almost blew that big lead, but I think I did not have that hiccup.

  • Maybe you could have said, It's close.

  • It's gonna come down to the wire.

  • But I think right now you're looking at John Elway.

  • Peyton Manning, Andrew Luck.

  • There was never a debate there, and certainly, I think with Trevor Lawrence there will be no debate come late April, he will be guaranteed to be the number one pick in the NFL draft.

  • Maybe Green into your New York Jets way can only help.

  • Meanwhile, McShay well, I think most people look at it that way.

  • Maybe the better question at this point then is, Do you expect them to go 12 overall?

  • Not just the top two quarterbacks, but the first two players.

  • Todd off the board.

  • I dio I do it, You know, it depends on who's drafting there.

  • We'll have to see.

  • But ifit's Jets Jacksonville, Let's say then, either the Jets were gonna stick with Sam Donald and trade that pick and get even Mawr draft leverage than they have.

  • They already have four first round picks in the next next two years, but they could easily stay there trying to trade Sam and then use that pick on Trevor Lawrence, which presumably could be an upgrade for them at the position.

  • And I agree with melamine.

  • Trevor Lawrence is the highest grade that I've given to to a player since Andrew Luck in 2012.

  • So you're talking about rare air.

  • I you know, I wasn't around for for evaluating Elway and some of the other guys.

  • But But Andrew looks the highest grade I've ever given, and and he's right there behind him.

  • So I think Lawrence is clearly number one.

  • And I think if if Jacksonville setting a tour, even if it's a team that doesn't need a quarterback, I think a team will trade up to that number two spot to make sure they can secure Fields because there are other good quarterbacks.

  • Trey Lance from North Dakota State.

  • Probably gonna be a top 10 Top 15 pick.

  • Zach Wilson from BYU has been awesome this year against Subpart competition, but he's he's worked his way into the first round.

  • Mac Jones from Alabama is a possibility in the first round.

  • Kyle Trask is probably gonna be the second round coming out of Florida the great year he's had.

  • So we have a lot of good quarterbacks this year, but Trevor Lawrence is that just at a different level, so we have Lawrence.

  • We have fields.

  • Mel, pick up the thought there.

  • Who's the third quarterback in this draft to you?

  • Yeah.

  • Trade Lance.

  • North Dakota State.

  • Now he had that one game against Central Arkansas.

  • October 3rd.

  • He was 15 to 30 with his first interception of his career.

  • He was off his game, his accuracy.

  • He looked like he was pressing a little rusty, maybe a rush 143 yards in that game.

  • He did bring them back from behind to win that football game.

  • He was spectacular in 2019, 28 touchdown passes and zero picks in the 67% completion percentage.

  • Now you think about Zach Wilson, who tied mentioned BYU cupcake after cupcakes.

  • That's impressive.

  • No crowd noise, no fans has impacted him positively.

  • I think Wilson could put pressure on lands, but I think Trey Lance at the end of the day is probably the most intriguing prospect.

  • Most interesting prospect because we only have one game this year.

  • Only 17 career starts for Lance Sanchez had 16 coming out of U.

  • S.

  • C.

  • H.

  • Robiskie had 13.

  • It's definitely a red flag there, with only 17 starts and the fact that it is one start this year.

  • He wasn't lighten it up via the air again.

  • The one start came.

  • They created this one game season for him.

  • Which Todd You said it once on the show, and I agree the strangest thing that I've ever seen in my life.

  • But we're so quarterback centric and understandably so, that that's what so many people are interested in.

  • But Todd McShay give me the best player in this draft who isn't a quarterback.

  • I would go with Peninsula, the offensive tackle from Oregon, but he opted out, so we're not getting to see him play.

  • Micah Parsons, the linebacker from Penn State, opted out.

  • Can't see him play that he's a top five players.

  • Well, two marks hace from L S U is another one who is a top five prospect who opted out and isn't playing this year.

  • So you got three of the top five players in this draft not playing college football this season, so it makes it the strangest year for evaluating that we've ever seen, at least in my career.

  • But what I do love is the past.

  • Catchers in this group, you know, with to march a smell issue.

  • The to Alabama guys.

  • Devante Smith has been the most consistent of the four great receivers.

  • Air gonna wind up in the first two rounds in two years, you've got Jalen Waddell, who's injured, injured but so explosive.

  • One healthy Rashad Bateman, who's a lot like Juju Smith Schuster, the Minnesota wide receiver.

  • And Kyle Pits, who is a technically a tight end.

  • But about £240 out of Florida is having a monster year.

  • It could be the 10th tight end taken in the top 10 in over 50 years of the NFL draft.

  • It's interesting.

  • Male.

  • I know you had mentioned Micah Parsons.

  • Let me wrap it up with this for you.

  • Mel Kiper.

  • So many of these players is Todd just said not playing.

  • How does that impact the evaluation?

  • Not just that you guys make, but maybe in the bigger picture that the NFL teams are gonna make.

  • Yeah, I was asked for one word to describe this year after I said mysterious because you had 20 players early rounders opt out before the season.

  • 13 Mawr opt out.

  • During the season, we had a couple injured so There's a lot of guys that you don't have sample size from and you don't have that final year from that makes that Senior Bowl Week that combine workout Pro Day is really important.

  • I think you're gonna go into this draft with less information when some of the guys you're picking in the 1st and 2nd round we've probably ever had in the history of the NFL draft.
