Subtitles section Play video Print subtitles >> James: CLIP FROM THE PROM WHICH IS ON NETFLIX RIGHT NOW. NICOLE, WE JUST SAW YOU GIVING SOME ZAZZ THERE, THAT NUMBER IS ONE OF MY ABSOLUTE FAVORITES IN THE FILM. WAS IT FUN FOR YOU TO GET YOUR ZAZZ ON IN THAT ROLE? YOU LOOKED LIKE YOU WERE HAVING A GREET TIME. >> I WAS HAVING A GOOD TIME. I WASN'T IN THE REHEARSALS. I WAS TERRIFIED. I WAS TERRIFIED OF BEING IN HEELS ON ITS STAIRCASE, DOING ALL OF THIS. SO I REHEARSED AND REHEARSED AND REHEARSED. AND I HAD-- AS WE ALL KNOW, WE HAD-- OUR DANCE TEACHERS AND CHOREOGRAPHER, I MEAN IT BAS JUST OH, THEY GOT ME THROUGH IT, THEY WHAT BE STANDING OFF CAMERA GOING-- OR, YOU KNOW, ALL THOSE,-- BUT ON THE DAY BY THE TIME WE GOT TO STUDIO, I LOVED AND JOE ALAN IS JUST DIVINE. >> NOW SPEAKING OF THE CHOREOGRAPHY, KERRY, YOU WHICH I THOUGHT WAS-- YOU CON VINED RYAN TO PUT YOURSELF IN THE FINAL DANCE NUMBER. WHICH YOU WERE SO GOOD IN. WERE YOU HAPPY WITH HOW IT TURNED OUT. I WAS VERY,-- I. >> I REMEMBER WE WERE ALL IN THAT AUDITORIUM TOGETHER AND I WAS LISTENING TO YOU REHEARSE AND TALK ABOUT HOW MUCH FUN IT WAS. I WAS LIKE I WANTED TO BE WITH THE COOL KIDS. I WANTED TO BE IN THAT FINALE. AND YOU WERE LIKE DON'T DO IT, SAVE YOURSELF. IT'S SO HARD. AND I DIDN'T LISTEN. AND I'M GLAD I DIDN'T LISTEN BECAUSE THAT SCENE, THOSE DAYS WERE SO SPECIAL, TO BE IN THAT PROM WITH ALL THOSE BACKGROUND ACTORS. A LOT OF PEOPLE DON'T KNOW, THOSE KIDS MOST OF THEM WERE LGBTQ YOUNG PEOPLE WHO MANY OF THEM HADN'T GONE TO THEIR OWN PROM. AND WHEN THEY WALKED IN THE ROOM, THEY WERE BLOWN AWAY. THEY JUST, THEY FELT LIKE WE WERE CELEBRATING THEM. AND WE WERE. AND IT WAS, I WOULDN'T HAVE MISSED THAT FOR THE WORLD. AND TO BE ABLE TO DANCE NEXT TO YOU AND TRIP OVER MY FEET NEXT TO YOU WAS JUST THE PRIVILEGE OF A LIFETIME, BOFT YOU. >> James: NOW NICOLE, YOU HAVE ALWAYS LOVED MUSICALS. BUT THERE IS ONE ROLE THAT YOU AUDITIONED FOR WHICH I'M DEVASTATED YOU DIDN'T DO. BECAUSE I WOULD HAVE LOVED TO HAVE SEEN YOU. DID YOU NOT ONCE AUDITION FOR THE ROLE OF "ANIE" IN A STAGE PRODUCTION OF ANIE. >> I DID. IT WAS WHAT THEY CALL, ON SOME CALLS WHICH I READ ABOUT IN THE NEWSPAPER. I THOUGHT MY MOM WOULD NEVER TAKE ME. SHE WAS ALWAYS LIKE NO, NO, NO, YOU'RE NOT DOING THAT. BUT SHE DID DRIVE ME TO THAT. SO WHEN WE GOT THERE, AND THERE WERE LIKE 400 KIDS AND THEY WERE MEASURING YOU BEFORE YOU WENT IN BECAUSE YOU COULDN'T BE TOO TALL. AND I WAS TALLER THAN THE HEIGHT THAT THEY HAD. I TALKED MY WAY IN. BUT I ONLY GOT-- I GOT OUT ON THE STAGE, I GOT THROUGH TWO LINES, AND THEY WERE LIKE NO, NO, NO, NO, AND WE WAITED ALL DAY. WAITING TO AUDITION. I WANTED TO BE AN ORPHAN, ANYTHING, I JUST WANTED TO BE IN THAT MUSICAL. I LOVED THAT MUSICAL. AS IT IS MY. >> I DON'T THINK IT'S TOO LATE FOR YOU TO PLAY THAT ROLE. >> WITH THE HAIR IN THE UNDOING. >> NOW KERRY, I'M ALWAYS THRILLED WHEN I'M IN YOUR ORBIT. I FEEL LIKE YOU'VE ALWAYS GOT THE RIGHT THING TO SAY AT THE RIGHT TIME AND AFTER THIS ABSOLUTE BLEEP BLEEP OF A YEAR, DO YOU HAVE A MESSAGE OF HOPE FOR US AS WE MOVE INTO 2021? >> OH GEE, JAMES. >> James: COME ON. >> TAKE IT AWAY. >> I GUESS I MEAN ONE OF THE THING HERE IS HOW MANY OF OTHER HEROES WE LOST WHETHER CHADWICK BOSEMAN OR JOHN LEWIS OR RUTH BADER GINSBURG, WE'VE-- KOBE BRYANT, SO MANY OF OUR HEROS WERE TAKEN FROM US THIS YEAR. AND I THINK PART OF WHAT I DECIDED THAT IS ABOUT FOR MYSELF IS YOU KNOW, THE TIME FOR HERO WORSHIP IS LEAVING US. THAT WE'RE ALL REALIZING THAT WE ARE THE HEROES OF OUR OWN STORY. THAT WE HAVE THE POTENTIAL TO MAKE INCREDIBLE CHANGE IN OUR OWN FAMILIES AND COMMUNITIES AND THAT IS WHAT THE PROM IS ALL ABOUT. AMAZING CELEBRITIES COME IN AND THINK THEY CAN CHANGE THE WORLD BUT IT IS JUST ONE YOUNG WOMAN WHO HAS THE POWER TO REALLY TRANSFORM THE WORLD AROUND HERE. I THINK YOU SAW THAT WITH RECORD NUMBER OF PEOPLES VOTING. WITH PEOPLE SHOWING UP WEARING MASKS AND PROTECTING THEIR COMMUNITIES. SO I THINK PEOPLE STEPPING TOO THEIR POWER AND KNOWING THAT THEY ARE THE HEROES OF THEIR OWN STORY, THEY ARE THE LEAD OF THEIR OWN MOVIE THAT THEY ARE LIVING, THAT GIVES ME A LOT OF HOPE. >> LOOK AT THAT. >> AND IN MANY RESPECTS IT ALL COMES BACK TOANIE, WHAT WE ARE REALLY SAYING IS THE SUN WILL COME OUT TOMORROW. AND I THINK THAT, THE SUN WILL COME OUT TOMORROW. AND IF IT DOESN'T, THERE IS ALWAYS A CHRISTMAS BUSH
