PLEASE WELCOME THE INCREDIBLE KELLY
MARIE TRAN.
HOW ARE SNU.
>> OH MY GOOSH GOSH THANK YOU.
>> James: HOW NICE TO SEE YOU.
>> I AM SUCH A HUGE TAN.
>> James: WE ARE ALL HUGE FANS OF YOURS, SO HAPPY THAT YOU ARE
HERE AND IN THE STUDIO.
HOW DO YOU FEEL, ARE YOU FEELING HAPPY TO BE DRESSED AND OUT OF
THE HOUSE.
>> I FEEL SO HAPPY, SERIOUSLY WALKING UP THE STAIRS, WHEN WAS
THE LAST TIME I WORE HEELS, I HAVE TO GET USED TO THEM, IT HAS
BEEN A YEAR.
>> James: YOU HAVE TO TEACH YOURSELF TO WALK AGAIN.
>> YEAH.
>> James: WE ARE SO THRILLED YOU ARE HERE, YOU HAVE HAD THE
MOST AMAZING SEASON CAREERWISE AND NOW IN THIS HUGE DISNEY
MOVIE THAT PEOPLE ARE LOVING.
YOU HAVE BEEN OBSESSED WITH DISNEY SINCE YOU WERE A CHILD,
RIGHT.
HOW DEEP IS THIS OBSESSION.
>> IT IS EMBARRASSING.
>> James: GO ON.
>> IT'S BAD.
I MEAN SO MY CHILDHOOD BEDROOM IS FILLED COMPLETELY IN TACT AT
MY PARENT'S HOUSE.
SO YEAH, BASICALLY YOU WALK INTO MY BEDROOM, THE FIRST THING YOU
SEE IS A STAR ON THE DOOR THAT SAYS DRESSING ROOM, SO THAT
GIVES YOU A LITTLE INFO ABOUT WHO I WAS AS A KID.
>> James: I GET IT.
>> YOU WALK IN, THERE ARE ALL THESE POSTERS OF MUSICALS THAT I
DID AS A CHILD LIKE 4 2-7BD STREET, GUYS & DOLLS AND THEN
YOU SEE MY TWIN BED WHICH STILL TO THIS DAY WHEN I VISIT MY
PARENTS I'M SLEEPING IN THIS TWIN BED, "LITTLE MERMAID" BED
SHEETS STILL THERE.
IT GOES DEEP, THERE IS MORE.
I COULD GO ON.
>> James: LOOK AT YOU NOW, YOUR PARENTS MUST BE SO PROUD OF
YOU.
WERE THEY ALWAYS ON BOARD WITH THIS AS A CAREER CHOICE?
>> OH MAN.
THEY ARE GOING TO WATCH THIS SO I NEED TO BE CAREFUL ABOUT WHAT
I SAY HERE.
MY PARENTS ARE WONDERFUL AND I LOVE THEM SO MUCH.
BUT THEY, THEY ARE BOTH FROM VIETNAM.
THEY ARE BOAT REFUGEES SO THEY REALLY, ALL OF THIS STUFF IS
JUST SO IMPOSSIBLE TO THEM.
SO I THINK YEAH, I THINK AS A KID THEY SORT OF THOUGHT I WAS
CRAZY AND I THINK THEY STILL KIND OF THINK I'M A LITTLE BIT
CRAZY.
>> James: YEAH.
>> YEAH.
>> James: BUT WHEN YOU FIRST STARTED BOOKING JOBS AND THINGS,
CUZ I CAN REMEMBER WHEN I FIRST GOT MY-- MY PARENTS DIDN'T
REALLY THINK THE JOBS EXISTED.
I WOULD GO TO AUDITIONS AND NOT GET THEM.
IT NEVER OCCURRED TO ME THAT I WOULD EVER GET ANYTHING.
THEY MUST BE THRILLED WITH WHAT IS HAPPENING IN YOUR LIFE NOW?
>> YEAH, I THINK THEY'RE ABSOLUTELY PROUD OF WHAT I AM
DOING.
AND I FEEL REALLY GRATEFUL TO HAVE SORT OF BEEN ABLE TO OPEN
THEIR EYES TO THE POSSIBILITY OF THIS AT ALL.
BECAUSE IT IS SO FAR AWAY FOR THEM.
>> James: WHEN YOU LANDED STAR WARS WHAT DID THEY THINK?
>> WELL, MY DAD HATES ANYTHING SCI-FI OR FANTASY.
>> James: GOOD START.
>> GOOD START, RIGHT.
>> James: WOW, SO EVEN IF YOU GET STAR WARS YOUR DAD IS STILL
ANNOYED.
THAT MUST-- I MEAN, WHAT DOES HE WANT.
THE BIGGEST MOVIE OF ALL, YEAH, I'M NOT REALLY INTO SKY FIE A
FRIEND OF MINE IS A STANDUP COME ED PAN-- COMEDIAN AND HIS DAD
STOPPED GOING TO SEE HIM ABOUT FIVE-- AGO AND HE THANKED HIS
DAD, DAD, ARE YOU GOING TO COME TO THE SHOW, AND THE DAD WAS
LIKE IT'S NOT REALLY MY SORT OF THING.
AND HE DIDN'T KNOW IF HIS DAD MEANT COMEDY OR HIM.
>> WELL, MY PARENTS DIDN'T GO TO THE EPISODE-- BECAUSE THEY
COULDN'T RESCHEDULE A DENTIST APPOINTMENT.
IT IS A TRUE STORY.
MY DAD IS LIKE KELLY, WHY IS IT ON A MONDAY.
I CAN'T-- DO YOU KNOW HOW LONG IT TAKES TO SCHEDULE A CLEANING?
>> James: YOU KNOW HOW MANY STAR WARS PREMIERS COME AROUND?
I MEAN ALSO NO ONE LIKES GOING TO THE DENTIST.
I WOULD LOVE TO BE THERE BUT I HAVE GOT THIS ROOT CANAL AND I
JUST HAVE BEEN PUTTING IT OFF AND PUTTING IT OFF.
>> THAT IS HOW LITTLE HE LIKES SCI-FI MOVIES, WE RATHER BE
GETTING A CLEANING.
>> James: AFTER STAR WARS YOU TRAVELED TO VIETNAM TO VISIT
YOUR PARENT'S HOMELAND.
WHAT WAS THAT EXPERIENCE LIKE?
>> IT WAS INCREDIBLE.
HONESTLY, HI NEVER BEEN THERE BEFORE, WE GREW UP IN A
HOUSEHOLD WHERE MY PARENTS PAREN ABSOLUTELY FOCUSED ON PUTTING
FAD ON THE TABLE, WE NEMP WENT ON VACATION OR THEY NEVER BOUGHT
CLOTHES FOR THEMSELVES, TO TO BE IN A PLACE WHERE I COULD NOT
ONLY GO TO VIETNAM OR BRING THEM BACK THERE, IT WAS THE FIRST
TIME THEY HAD BEEN THERE IN 40 YEARS.
SO IT WAS REALLY EMOTIONAL.
WE ROAD BIKES OUT TO MY DAD'S LITTLE VILLAGE WHERE HE LIVED.
IT WAS INSANE.
>> James: AND LET'S CONGRATULATE YOU ON RAYA AND THE
LAST DRAGON WHICH IS GETTING THE MOST INCREDIBLE REVIEWS.
>> THANK YOU.
>> James: PEOPLE ARE GOING CRAZY FOR THIS, I CAN IN THE
WAIT TO WATCH IT FOR MY KIDS, FOR ANYONE WHO HASN'T CAUGHT IT
WHAT IS IT ABOUT AND WITHOUT DO YOU PLAY?
>> IT IS ABOUT A GIRL NAMED RAYA WHO IS, WHEN WE FIRST MEET HER
IN HER YOUNGER YEARS SHE SEES THE WORLD IN A REALLY IDEAL WAY
AND THEN THE SORT OF HORRIBLE TRAUMATIC THING HAPPENS AND THE
WORLD CERTAINLILY BREAKS APART.
AND SHE STARTS TO SEE THE WORLD FROM A PLACE OF DISTRUST AND SHE
CAN'T-- SHE FEELS LIKE EVERYTHING IS DANGEROUS.
SHE DOESN'T WANT TO MAKE ANY FRIENDS.
SHE WON'T EVEN SHARE FOOD WITH PEOPLE.
AND THEN YOU GO ON THIS JOURNEY AND YOU KIND OF SEE HOW SHE'S
TRYING TO FIND THE GOODNESS IN THE WORLD AGAIN.
SO YEAH, I GET TO PLAY RAYA BOTH IN HER YOUNGER YEARS AND OLDER
YEARS AND IT HAS BEEN-- IT IS ATRIUM.
BEING A DISNEY KID LIKE I TOLD YOU.
AND TO NOW BE A PART OF THIS.
IS CUCOO BANANAS FOR SURE.
>> James: I THINK IT IS AMAZING.
THERE WILL BE A KID OUT THERE SOMEWHERE WHO IS GOING TO HAVE
IN THEIR PARENT'S HOUSE, THEY ARE GOING TO HAVE AOUS-- YOU
KNOW, BED SPREAD OF RAYA AND THE LAST DRAGON AND THE WHOLE THING
WILL COME FULL CIRCLE.
CAN I NOT WAIT TO WATCH IT.
