Subtitles section Play video Print subtitles Snails are a very important part of what is called a food web. A food web shows how animals and plants are connected together and how they rely on each other for food. Small animals eat plants, and then those small creatures are eaten by bigger creatures. Snails are called detritivores. They eat rotten leaves and help the soil by recycling waste and keeping goodness in the ground so that plants and crops can grow. Snails, in term, provide food for animals like hedgehogs or small birds. Bigger animals like owls, then eat the small birds and hedgehogs. And so the food web continues. So without animals like snails, there wouldn't be enough food for animals like hedgehogs or even owls. They're all part of a large food web. All the animals in the food web are very important. Even the littlest snails, as they all have a part to play in keeping the Earth working as it should.
