Subtitles section Play video Print subtitles Here's how to study when you don't feel like it. The first step is to run a personal audit. You won't be able to fix the problem until you have a better understanding of your tendencies and hangups. When do you notice the most resistance? The least? Second, leverage the power of language to your advantage. Replace the word “but” with “and”. If you need to study for your midterm but you're tired, you will view the situation differently than saying “and” you're tired. Subtle, but powerful. Third, lower the activation energy of studying. Do this by creating smaller sub-tasks, reducing the time commitment, or choosing easier tasks first to build momentum, thus making the larger task easier to start. And fourth, make studying more interesting by switching the subjects when you get bored, but no sooner than every 30 to 60 minutes.
