Subtitles section Play video Print subtitles So I think, compare to people around me, I do one thing differently, that really helps me with my language skills and that is, I purposely look for movies / TV series in a different language or in a language that I'm learning to me the fact that a movie or TV series is in another language besides English it's a plus point for me, because if someone were to reccomend me a series in English, it has to be really good, umm otherwise, I'll be just like... meh, just another English series so umm, that's really the one thing that I do and how does that help me with my language skills? so if you're learning a language, let's say learning French and you do not live in French-speaking country it's just going to be hard to get immersed unless you know a lot of French people, or you pay to be in a community of French speakers, whatever so in that case, immersion is quite difficult movies and TV however, they're the next best thing to get immersed so I recently got addicted to this TV series called "dix pour cent" in French and that,- I think I started watching it mid-August and I got so addicted to it I finished it within a week, and,- or two? two weeks and now I'm rewatching the series again but with French subtitles so first I,- so it's a French series I first watched it in English subtitles, just to know the story and then now I'm watching it in French subtitles and eversince I start watching this series or binge watching this series my French skills has really improved a lot without me taking any classes or anything I really improved my listening, my reading, my pronunciation, and my speaking skills but writing not so much, because I think when it comes to writing, my French is awful but especially my pronunciation and my listening skills has gotten so much better how so? well, the listening part, I improved it, because obviously, I watch the dialogues, and then I'm just,- I just get so used to how French people speak not just the language, but also how they,- how they combined or how they swallowed the words together umm, because especially French when it comes to pronounciation or accent, is just a lot.. worse, and a lot harder to understand than English so I'm not only used to listening to the French language so not just the words, but also what comes in between it so like the fillers, like the, euuhh uh huu or also like the gestures, their facial expression what are the informal ways French people speak and I think that is very important and I wouldn't have really learned much about this if I were to learn French in a class room so I think, movie and series it really is a lot better, for me to learn this way to my reading skills, also improved, because then I watch the series with subtitles first I watch them with the English subtitles as I told you and the second time, I watch it with the French so watching it the second time with the French subtitles that really allowed me to... make connection between how a word is spoken, and how a word is written and for languages like English and French where,- what you read and what you hear is completely different, it's very important to make that connection between spoken and the written word and if I were to watch the series on my laptop, because I normally watch it on my phone I use double subtitles and the double subtitles is also a lot better it's not really good to watch with double subtitles to be honest, if you wanna get entertained because then you're just gonna get focused on the subtitles but to learn, double subtitles, they're just amazing and for the speaking and pronunciation um this doesn't,- this isn't always a given just because you're watching series in different langauge, doesn't automatically mean that you're going to be able to speak but for me it works because, when I watch it even for the first or the second time, I always mimic the characters, the native speakers and then I even try to redo the dialogue when I'm alone at home let's say if I'm in the bathroom, or in the toilet, I find myself speaking to myself in French and that really works with my pronunciation, so what I do is that, when I watch it for the second time in French subtitles, I pause it a lot, and then I try to really mimic their pronunciation and then I try to experiment as much as possible, to,- to make myself sound as French as possible, like these characters so that way, without knowing,- after doing it for two weeks straight my pronunciation just got a lot better and whenever I'm in doubt on how to pronounce certain words, then I find tutorials of it on YouTube "How to pronunce nasal sounds in French" then that way I really improved it it's not just watching series, but also watching the series with the goal of learning and also watching tutorials next to it this is also a method that I use when I was learning English in middleschool I was so addicted with the series "Gilmore girls" and, I also pause the series a lot then, I know that for a lot of people is kind of like "yeah but if you pause it a lot, you can't enjoy it" so that is why, before you watch a series, you wanna know, am I watching this to learn? or a I watching this to get entertained? when I watch a new episode for the very first time, I watch it to get entertained because I'm just so immersed in the story and the later time, I will watch the episode again, because then by the time I already know how the story is, and I can just focus on the use of the language and how they structure their sentences, how the sentences go with each other and even look into the grammar it's like "why are they using this and not that?" and then if I really don't know then I will look up to the grammar rules I honestly think and I whole-heartedly believe at least for me... watching a TV series, or movies is just the best method to learn a language and I think this is the secret sauce as to how I get to learn different languages at a rapid phase find a series that you love in the language that you're learning, and you'll be surprised so I also have an online course that teaches you exactly this if you guys wanna learn English and um,- you guys can go check it out here, it's in Bahasa, and yes,- so that is it for me today, I hope you guys like my video and I will se you next week in other video, and have a good day!
