  • mhm, mm mhm, mm hmm.

  • Mhm, mhm Good evening everyone.

  • It is currently 10:42 PM and we're doing a kind of kitchen chats because it's actually my friend Natasha's birthday tomorrow.

  • Well actually, I think it was a while ago, but we're celebrating it tomorrow and I need to bring some food.

  • So I thought I would make an Apple pie.

  • Also.

  • I've been having a bit of a time lately.

  • I want to go into details.

  • Maybe I'll tell you about it small time, but Sunil, if I'm a little out of it, I apologize, I'm just going through some stuff.

  • So today, Well tonight we're just gonna do a nighttime cooking sesh with them.

  • Uh we're gonna have fun and make a pie.

  • Now the thing is, I was planning on doing a pie from scratch.

  • I was going to make the dough and make everything piniella have pie, but I go to the store today and Japan doesn't sell like the same flower that they sell in Australia and America.

  • So I don't even know what the translations would be for the flower that they sell, but like some of them are purposed for like temperature and baking cakes and some of them are purposed for things like Okonomiyaki, I googled it and it was like if you use the wrong flower for your pastry or pastry will be chilly and terrible and I was like, I can't risk that.

  • So I found myself some pie sheets later.

  • My friend told me that if you mix both kinds of flowers together, you get an all purpose flour which can be used for pastry apparently.

  • So maybe next time I'll give that a go.

  • But for now we use the patient's also restricted by the limits of japanese supermarkets.

  • We don't have granny smith apples here, there's no real tart apples debate with because it's not really a thing.

  • So I got green apples, but they're not talked, they're actually quite sweet.

  • So I'll just be cutting down on the amount of sugar that I put in the recipe.

  • Also, I've been reading a lot of recipes and I don't know what you want to go with.

  • So I'm just gonna make it up as I go, I'm not going to measure anything because I can't be bothered.

  • I just want to make this pie and have it ready for tomorrow.

  • Said the Natasha can have a great birthday party.

  • Shall we get started?

  • Then we'll put up my hair.

  • Oh God, what is this?

  • Let me just wash my hands again.

  • So for this recipe, I will be using apples, cinnamon and nutmeg, brown sugar, corn starch, pi sheets, a lemon and an egg memory cod era.

  • That is that's just what I wanted to hear.

  • Am I cursed.

  • Mhm.

  • I do the whole like old Nintendo trick and it's fine.

  • So I'll just do it like this.

  • But that means that the mic might not pick up too much stuff.

  • Hopefully you guys can hear me from over there.

  • Oh yeah.

  • The best thing about this kitchen chats is at the end you're gonna come with me to the party, I'm gonna take you guys so that you can see everyone eat the apple pie.

  • So do you guys watch a grade school on netflix by the selling woman Red panda?

  • And she lived a pretty normal kind of average life and she has like daily frustrations in the way that she takes out these frustrations is by going to karaoke and screaming death metal versions of what's happened to her.

  • But it's very fun.

  • It's very good series.

  • I recently watched the latest season um and actually I do want to talk about the ending, so if you don't want to hear spoilers please give ahead to this time.

  • But yeah, I'm gonna tell you my hands again, basically in this series, in that season she falls for a kind of casual fun dumb guy.

  • And then it turns out that he's like a billionaire, a billionaire ceo but to summarize it, he has very different values to her.

  • So he's like you can quit your job and you can do anything that you want and I was like oh my God that's such a good opportunity for her, like finally she can do something better than a salary job.

  • Also the guy didn't want to get married and also he didn't want to have kids.

  • Eventually it ends up with her saying that she doesn't she doesn't have anything else that she wants to do, she doesn't have like a passion or a thing that that she wants to do, like if she could do anything in the world, she doesn't have something like that and she's fine with just working as a salary woman, so that's kind of a conclusion and when I first watched it I was like what the heck is this ending?

  • This is such a terrible ending that she is giving up the possibility to do anything in the whole world and I was I was like no, no no, that's like not okay, everyone's got dreams and passions and then since then I have kind of begun to understood Mhm what she means like it's okay to not be a famous actress or like a billionaire or create the world's first blah or cure blah, follow your dreams, it's okay to not do that, if that makes sense.

  • I think a friend of mine put it well when she was like I'm sick of all of the tv shows and movies showing me that there has to be like this big dream and it's this big like purpose and striving for something, sorry, I think I've kind of come to understand that a lot better where sometimes I've had the opportunity to be like, huh, if I could do anything in the whole world, what would I do?

  • I'm kind of okay with boring stuff at the moment and not really fighting for a bigger purpose or a giant career in anything, but that being said now to cook the apples.

  • Now I'm gonna cut the apples, I'm just going to slice them.

  • Mhm.

  • I think I'm gonna do quarters.

  • Okay, I'm just gonna cut it into pieces like this and then slice so I'm going to cut each piece into something like this and then I'll just put it in the bowl.

  • I think I got too many apples also, there's Eon, the Eon supermarkets, they now have pies, they have beef and cheese and beef stew and chicken stew and apple pie and they have sausages.

  • I do feel like Japan's constantly stepping up its food game when it comes to international ingredients.

  • Yeah, it's just so big and beautiful.

  • Alright, I might stop talking and just get the rest of this done, we'll be right back.

  • Okay, so I got all my apples here.

  • Well, nice and cut up and now I'm gonna add some ingredients to and get them on the stove problem.

  • Now I still haven't been able to find dark brown sugar while I've been in Japan, they might have it at Tommy's like a specialist baking store, but this is the brown sugar that they sell at normal supermarkets, so it's a lot lighter.

  • Now I'm gonna put in some cinnamon and nutmeg.

  • Okay, and then I'm gonna add a little bit of corn starch, the corn starch.

  • Should help to just thicken it up a little bit.

  • All right, I'm gonna put them in the pot.

  • Yeah.

  • Okay.

  • I'm gonna put some butter in.

  • I read in a recipe that bottom adds richness.

  • So I love a good rep chapel plane.

  • I just gonna add a little bit of water.

  • Mm It's good.

  • Oops.

  • Okay.

  • Yeah.

  • Yeah.

  • Apples have been cooking.

  • They're getting pretty soft.

  • Mm.

  • Mm hmm.

  • Pretty good.

  • I might actually look at a little bit of salt and maybe a bit more cinnamon and a little sugar I guess.

  • Maybe because it doesn't have the same like intense flavor that brown sugar does hold dot brown sugar and me.

  • Mhm.

  • It's different.

  • Mhm.

  • Yeah.

  • Alright.

  • That's good to go.

  • So let's check out the pie sheets.

  • I can put two of these next to each other and roll them out so they can fit into our pie dish.

  • Also at this point I am going to bring it in the oven.

  • Yeah.

  • Okay.

  • I think Now one of these is a bit more solid than the other one.

  • Like frozen solid.

  • Yeah.

  • Yeah.

  • Yeah.

  • Mhm.

  • Owner, Come on buddy.

  • Just make it to the edge.

  • Oh no, it's not long enough.

  • Come on.

  • Little more.

  • There we go.

  • Okay.

  • Yeah.

  • Did you probably googled like ways to make a pie crust.

  • Like look good before I did this before I designed my own little thing.

  • Yeah, that's fine.

  • Okay.

  • It's just still like that.

  • That's fine.

  • Okay.

  • I'm gonna put the filling in.

  • Oh, I can't believe I'm doing it.

  • Mhm.

  • Well no, no things like please.

  • Yeah that looks fine.

  • Okay so that's filling in and then I just need to do some criss crosses over the top.

  • I'm just like gentle about it.

  • Mhm.

  • Don't actually cut the table do you?

  • Should be okay.

  • Oh my gosh I'm really making it.

  • I'm really making a pie.

  • Yeah that should be fine.

  • Just three.

  • Yeah through it.

  • And then we just got to do the egg washing minutes in the oven.

  • It's a bit messy but that's okay.

  • All right.

  • I mean google how to do an egg watch.

  • Does it just say oh I wash is a mix of milk.

  • Well it can be a mix of milk and eggs.

  • All right cool.

  • It's getting so messy.

  • I don't know if I have it in me to do the washing up tonight.

  • All right.

  • One A and I guess some milk.

  • I think that's fine.

  • Uh huh.

  • Okay.

  • Yeah my parents are covered in flour.

  • Mhm.

  • Okay.

  • No that should be fine.

  • Okay.

  • Okay here it is for a second time pie.

  • Not too bad.

  • I know I use pious sheikhs but who cares.

  • All right Natasha.

  • Hope this turns out good, pray pray for your pray for your birthday pie.

  • All right Godspeed my friend.

  • What's happened there?

  • Yes and it just fits so nicely and they look at that, look at that pie Turn in.

  • Okay I'm gonna clean up and take a break and maybe also have a nap because it's past midnight.

  • But gonna wait for this guy to cook.

  • I'm glad he's finally in the oven.

  • I thought I'd be done by 1230 including cooking time.

  • Ha ha.

  • Yeah.

  • Mhm.

  • The filling spilled out and it's burning on the bottom of the oven.

  • Hey guys, battery's about to die.

  • Hopefully we can make it.

  • I do have a spare one night.

  • The lighting is a bit off, but I'll show you tomorrow.

  • I'm gonna, I'm gonna go to bed, we leave to cool.

  • Uh and I'll bring it to the party tomorrow and bring you guys along too.

  • So, good night.

  • Hope you have us.

  • Good night.

  • I'll see you in a second by Hey, good morning.

  • Everybody.

  • It is the next day and I've got all my stuff ready to go to the party.

  • Good pie in the bag.

  • And then I'm also bringing a jar of or a thing of msu because I have a bunch left over from making it last year.

  • And then also I whipped up some soy cream.

  • Yeah, we gotta make our way to the party Natasha.

  • So cute.

  • Look at the birthday.

  • Okonomiyaki cake.

  • It's beautiful.

  • Happy birthday birthday girl.

  • Three months late.

  • We got keys too.

  • Got my plate of food.

  • So excited.

  • Okay, so it's time for the pie.

  • We just hit it up so I don't know if it's lost some of the topping, but anyway, let's just give it a go.

  • And I was like, cream as well.

  • Thank you.

  • Thank you.

  • I think so.

  • Just eating the pipe.

  • It's pretty, pretty good.

  • I think it would be better if it was fresh out the oven, but not too bad.

  • Especially with the soy cream.

  • It really elevates it.

  • I'm eating it with chopsticks because I got no other options.

  • Thank you.
