the multiverse is a concept about which we know  frighteningly little but it's not just a brain  

breaking concept in marvel movies it's a brain  breaking concept in real life too so what exactly  

is the multiverse the multiverse refers to a  hypothetical group of multiple universes which  

means that our universe which includes all that we  can see 14 billion light years in all directions  

may not be the only one while some physicists  have serious doubts about this possibility  

others have many theories as to how this could be  possible. one physicist and cosmologist Max Tegmark  

arranged these theories into a hierarchy that  gets progressively weirder in the first level  

it's assumed that space is infinite expanding  far beyond our own universe in theory this area  

could contain parallel universes with the same  physical laws as ours and because this region  

is so expansive it's possible that things repeat  leading to doppelgangers in level 2 there are an  

infinite number of level 1 multiverses that exist  in the same space time but may have different  

physical laws according to the external chaotic  inflation and cosmic inflation theories parts  

of our universe are continuously expanding these  pockets then sort of pinch off from our universe  

becoming their own universes. Level 3 is perhaps  the most popular in science fiction it's the many  

worlds theory where new universes branch off from  others whenever multiple outcomes could occur from  

an event like the flipping of a coin or making  any decision. this stems from a theory in quantum  

mechanics called the copenhagen interpretation  which says that a quantum particle doesn't exist  

in one state or another but in all possible  states known as a superposition that is until  

it's observed. before then all the possible  states of existence make up what we call a  

wave function but when the particle is observed  the wave function collapses and the particle  

is forced into one state however in the many  worlds theory there is no wave function collapse  

every possible state exists just in different universes finally we have the level 4 multiverse  

here anything is possible universes could exist  anywhere have different cosmological properties  

quantum states, and physical laws making them  impossible to visualize although the animator  

is still trying which shout out to you animator  the basis for this theory is math. Any mathematical  

structure that can be studied describes some sort  of existing universe. Scientists have actually been  

looking for physical evidence of other universes  for instance collision remains of our universe  

with another could appear as distortions in the  cosmic microwave background or special black holes  

could exist as the remains of pocket universes breaking off from our own so far no evidence  

has been found and no multiverse theory has been  proven, so while doctor strange may get to explore  

the multiverse we'll just have to wait and see  what's out there alright let's see what else is on
