I'm Pamela, we're Pillow Queens, and this is our Dublin. We hail from Ireland and call Dublin our home. We've toured all over the world, but Dublin is always our favorite place to play a gig. And we take a huge amount of inspiration from this beautiful city. Even our song, Liffey, was written about the river that runs directly through the heart of Dublin. We're going to take you to some of our favorite places we love to visit when we're not on the road, and these are the places we think make Dublin so special. One of my favorite things about Dublin is that you're never too far from a body of water. We just watched the sunrise here, off the coast of Howth, aboard Ireland Ferries. And it's been a beautiful morning. There's something really magical about Howth, a Peninsula on the North side. Their fishing port is the biggest source of fresh seafood in all of Dublin. I like to come here for fresh fish and chips, a walk up Howth cliff, or a sea swim. So this is Mark, from Ireland Ferries, Hello. And he's going to tell us a little bit about life on the sea. We bring people out to this beautiful picturesque island, Ireland's Eye. It's a beautiful beach on the island. It's facing West, so you tend to get the sun on this beach-- Yeah. --everyday. Gorgeous. After an early start, let's head back into town for a well-deserved coffee. So now we're at Wavetable in Drumcondra, and they do speciality coffees as well as sell records, specifically local Irish music, which is great to support the scene right now. Also, they sell lovely vegan treats and they have me addicted to iced coffees. It's absolutely fantastic that places like Wavetable are supporting local Irish music. But it's something that's so easy to do because we have such a wide range of genres and talent to choose from in this city, and in the country as a whole. So this is a Love Lane, the back entrance to the renowned Olympia Theatre. And if you look on your left here, you'll see a collaboration between the Irish artist Maser and the amazing musician Damien Dempsey. Anna Doran. Love Lane by Anna Doran. So it's called Love Lane, and it just has tiles of different quotes. Obviously, people have taken it upon themselves to write the little messages to their lovers. Happy birthday, Laura. There you go. Happy birthday, Laura. Floyd And Annika forever. Beautiful. Oh, I hope they're still together. As you walk through the city, you find yourself smack bang in the middle of places referenced by some of our greatest musicians and poets. From Brendan Behan to Damien Dempsey, these places don't have to be the most picturesque to have inspired some of our greatest artists, living and dead. Every street has a story to tell. Hi my name is Siobhan, and I'm the owner manager of Street 66. It is an LGBTQ orientated bar and we are massive fans of the Pillow Queens. Three Guinness, one Bulmers. No worries. Yum, thank you. Thanks so much. Delicious. Enjoy. My granddad instilled a deep love of Guinness in me. Her last name is McGuinness. And my second name is McGuinness. No relation, unfortunately. For me, I was not mad about it to begin with and then we went on tour around Europe. And every time we went to a new spot, I was like I'll have a Guinness here. And the guys were like, have it in Ireland. What's wrong with you? Just have it when we're at home. And now that I've had them at home, they're delicious. Dublin is a city that's changed so much over the years. While it still feels like the place I grew up in, full of amazing artists and beautiful communities, you can feel it about to burst with possibilities. Hey, we're at Vegan Sandwich Co, and we're here with Sam and-- How's it going? What would you recommend we order today? Vegan Sandwich Co is a wonderful business that I've been able to see grow from strength to strength, having got my first vegan chicken roll from them, two years ago at a food festival, to now having a dedicated shop for their gorgeous food in Smithfield. OK, well we'll have The Lush. OK. Extra toasty, chicken roll, breakfast muffin, and a kebab. Perfect. They were really able to thrive during the difficulties of the last year. They've even gone from two staff to 20 and are integral in building the new food culture within Dublin. Cheers. For fine dining, we head back to Howth. Here at Restaurant Mamo, they've perfected their own version of fish and chips in Mumbai. They're on the Michelin Guide and Chef Killian sources all local ingredients from North Dublin. Then do a ceviche of John Dory, compressed cucumber, red onion, a little coriander. Super fresh, using locally sourced fish, and it is gorgeous. This is our cod chip. So it's confit potato, topped with taramasalata and a little bit of salt and vinegar. Wow. Because everyone that comes to Howth has to have fish and chips. Wow, it's really good. Does it taste like fish and chips? Mmm. Dublin, to me, is home. But not only a home in which I can experience the people that I love and the city that I love, but it's also a place that I love to share. Share with anybody who has never been here before or is an occasional passerby. Hen's Teeth. Back on the state side, Hen's Teeth has a shop and art gallery, where Dublin artist Fatti Burke's modern interpretation of a traditional pub snug is on display. Hi. Welcome... Hiya, Kathy. I'm Cathy. Hi, Cathy. Can you tell us about Fatti Burke's-- your artist name-- Snug. Yeah. Well, yes, I'm Cathy. But I'm also Fatti Burke and I'm an illustrator who loves the pub. A lot of Irish memories are created in the pub. Really Irish nostalgic references that I brought here to Hen's Teeth. So if you want to come around the snuggery, I'll show you some of the details. I wanted to create somewhere that's read homey and fun. Everything from our "Gorgeous" pint glasses, to our mirror, and our hurleys. Hopefully for a trad session, might happen in here someday, with the barrel and the tin whistle. [PLAYING TIN WHISTLE] We love all the local businesses our city has to offer, but one of the great things about being from a small city is that nature is just a stone's throw away. My favorite thing about Dublin is that the sea, nature, city life, everything is on your doorstep. So we're at Sandymount Strand, which is a really nice place to grab a coffee, go for a walk, and watch some dogs. Watch some dogs. Watch some dogs. What's wrong with watching dogs? Nothing, it's wholesome. Look at that boy. If you look up here-- you'll have to squint a little bit -- you can see the Poolbeg Chimneys. It's a bit foggy today, so they're-- Just look at them here. As you can see here, this is what they would look like in real life. But it's actually kind of cool for it to be so foggy because it's quite eerie seeing them in the mist. What are they? It's the old electricity power station. They wanted to tear it down, but people find them very endearing and lovely. They're very iconic, to be fair. Cool. Yeah. [MUSIC - PILLOW QUEENS, "LIFFEY"] PILLOW QUEENS: (SINGING) Someday you'll have my head. You'll have my head on a silver plate. This river cuts our city in half, just trying to reach out to the sea, finds itself personifying more than just a body of water to the Dubliners that surround it. We tie our identities to which side of it we were born. We sing about it, we fling our bodies into its murky depths when the heat becomes too much, we kiss along its banks, we break up along them. We see ourselves as a long way from worshipping this river goddess, but instead we now stare into it and examine our reflection as a city. Sometimes we might even like what we see. [MUSIC - PILLOW QUEENS, "LIFFEY"] PILLOW QUEENS: (SINGING) Someday you'll have my head. You'll have my head on a silver plate. Someday you'll have my head. You'll have my head on a silver plate. Oh, spread me over the Liffey. When you visit Dublin, you're visiting small business owners, creative chefs, musicians of all genres, all inspired by the island we live on. You're visiting history and shores that have seen centuries of poetry, storytelling, and music making. [MUSIC - PILLOW QUEENS, "LIFFEY"] PILLOW QUEENS: (SINGING) Someday you'll have my head. Hopefully we'll bump into you in Dublin, one day. No doubt, having the absolute time of your life. [MUSIC - PILLOW QUEENS, "LIFFEY"] PILLOW QUEENS: (SINGING) Someday you'll have my head. Spread me over the Liffey. You'll have my head on a silver plate. Thanks for watching Lonely Planet. Please like and subscribe if you want to see more videos like this from around the world.
