  • These steps work for both Mac and PC.

  • Go to Google Maps in a web browser.

  • Type your location into the search bar,

  • then click on the "Layers" button

  • on the bottom left of the screen.

  • Click on "Terrain" to show topography and elevation.

  • Make sure that "View topography and elevation" is turned on

  • in the terrain slider at the bottom of the map.

  • You can toggle it on and off by clicking on the slider.

  • Zoom into the area on the map

  • where you want to see the elevation.

  • The numbers will appear as you get closer.

  • But be careful not to zoom in too far

  • as the contour and elevation lines will disappear.

  • You can do this in either the Google Maps app

  • or through a browser on your mobile device.

  • But we found that the contour lines

  • on the mobile browser version are easier to read,

  • so we will show you that method.

  • Go to Google Maps in a browser.

  • Type in your location in the search bar.

  • Click on the menu bar then select "Terrain."

  • Elevation lines will appear as you zoom in and out.

  • Note that the numbers may be faint

  • as they are written into the contours of the map.
