Subtitles section Play video Print subtitles Would you be happy as a doctor? Here are 4 questions to ask yourself. One, do you enjoy a good challenge? The path to becoming a physician is arduous. It’s a marathon, not a sprint, and one riddled with obstacles and challenges along the way. If you don’t enjoy the challenge, at least to some degree, you’ll quickly burn out. Two, are you in it for the money? Being a doctor is not nearly as lucrative as most people think. There are massive opportunity costs that come along with becoming a physician, and even after all of the training, most physicians still only live upper-middle class lifestyles. Three, do you enjoy helping others and can you tap into this in the healthcare setting? The pleasure and joy one derives from helping others is almost universal, but some people aren’t able to tap into this due to a strongly cynical outlook, being easily annoyed, or not being a team player. Four, are you resilient? Although burnout is a systemic issue, personal responsibility and resilience are necessary to not only survive, but thrive, as a future doctor. The challenges you face may be unfair, but you still have to take action in order to do something about them. Would you be happy as a doctor? Let me know with a comment below.
