Oh. (Kids Try Sustainable Food) Hello. - Hello. - Hello. - Hi. - Hi. Hi, I'm Clara. Clara, welcome. My name is Helena; I'm 11 years old. Hi, my name's Ethan and I'm 11 years old, but she's my twin sister. Today, you're gonna try sustainable foods. I don't know what that is. Have you heard of the sustainable food movement? - No. - No. Wait, I... I don't get that; wait. Do you ever go to the farmer's market? Yes. We usually get, like, honey sticks. - Oh, yeah, honey sticks. - A straw or something of honey. So, all the food that we're trying today is sustainable in some way. Sustainable foods is when you take care of the people that are, like, making the food and taking care of the planet. Boom! You are eating foods that are grown locally. You are using animal poop to fertilize your soil for your vegetables. Ew... Do you think you eat sustainably? Maybe; I still don't know what that means. What are some other ideas you got? How can we be sustainable? Stop using plastic. - We can start using Teslas. - No! Please serve us our first dish. Thank you. (Sustainable Chicken - Grown free range with local farm veggies) Okay, you can open your eyes. Chicken? That's really good. This thing's delicious. What do you think is sustainable about this? I know this is a carrot. It's dirty, so somebody planted it. The vegetables and the chicken are from the same farm. And this is one way to be sustainable. The chickens eat the leftover vegetables that humans don't. That's right. They used the chicken poop. What do they use the chicken poop for? They use it to grill the vegetables? I ate a whole entire carrot. They use chicken poop⏤we call it manure⏤to fertilize the soil. Boom! Is this sauce here, too? Is that... is that chicken... chicken poop, too? They just dyed it a different color? Some chickens are raised inside of tiny cages and other chickens get to roam free. I wanna make sure they roam free. Why? They're gonna be a whole lot funner to catch 'cause they're running. They also will be healthier and more nutritious when you eat them. 'Cause they got their exercise. Exactly; they got their exercise. (Sustainable Sushi - Locally caught fish) - Oh, I do... I have no⏤oh. That was a complex set of emotion. Wait, what is this? Sustainably caught tuna. Why is this tuna "suspanable"? -"Suspanable"? - "Sustain", with a "t". -Su-stainable. - This fishery, they catch in a very safe way for other, sort of, ocean plants and fish. And what is this green stuff? Yeah, that's called "bok choy". That's just one of my favorite fresh vegetables that is growing right now. It's kind of good; it just has a little weird taste. So, a lot of the problems when it comes to fish is that fishermen over-fish a population, which makes it hard for that species of fish to survive. That's why you can't catch, like, girl crabs. Tell me more. They need to be able to have babies so there's more crabs to catch. I knew you'd drop some knowledge. (Sustainable Salad - Native plants from the region) What is this? What⏤ It smells super good. - Is this, like, a salad? - Yeah. Have I even ate salad before? Kind of looks good, it's⏤but why does it have flowers in it? Dandelion? I knew I've tasted that before. You've had dandelions? Yes, I have, actually. There's this yellow one. There's this purple one, pink one. I know the flowers are not edible. Ho, ho, ho, that's what you think. They are edible? It looks like a forest. Okay, purple flower petal. It's really good. I don't know if I like that. I really don't know if I like that. - Oh, Chef. - Chef. See this round leaf here? - Yeah. - This is called mallow. This plant is actually growing on the sidewalk outside. - Really? - But these are from my brother's garden. But they grow wild everywhere. Fun fact: Vegetables start losing nutrients after 24 hours of being picked. Boom. This is my last dish, right? Your last dish is coming. (Sustainable Dessert - Raw & vegan mousse cake) Okay. Cake! Mint chocolate! This looks really good. That's a vegan, raw, live dessert. That's so good. Raw means it wasn't cooked. That's right; you're saving energy, which is a good way to be sustainable. It's alive? What do you mean by "live"? Please be bugs. Please be bugs. Please be bugs. No, there's no bugs. I mean enzymes. Little tiny bacteria. So, this is healthy, right? Yeah. So, I ate it, so, that means... things are moving around in my body? Yeah, and in a good way. What? I could tell the future. - Okay. - This will be our last dish. How did he do that? Magic! Hey. Okay, this is called the Da Vinci Kids app. Pick anything that looks good. Wow, there's a lot of games on here. - I wanna play... - That one? - I wanna play... - That one? It looks like you can do math and science and some brain-boosters puzzles. There's so many choices. Da Vinci Kids App, it's all ad free and it's safe for kids. Quizzes, okay. Second-hand items are often old, uncool, and broken. True or false? That... that's... that's... that's false. When recycled, aluminum can save enough energy to... - Power our TV... - Travel to Mars. Nope. - What? Three out of three stars. Yeah. I think it's really fun. I had fun playing this game. So, go to the App Store and type in "Da Vinci Kids". Go to the link in the description box.
