  • Hi, my name is Ronnie.

  • I have something for you.

  • This is called a hanger and I have a hanger when we use the verb have in english.

  • It shows possession or ownership.

  • I also have a beautiful purple marker.

  • Purple being my favorite color.

  • I'm going to teach you guys today about the crazy irregular verb of have.

  • Okay, first it shows possession or ownership.

  • Mind my hanger.

  • Um I have a hangar.

  • This thing's a hangar ownership and possession basically means it's the same thing.

  • If I possess something, I could have stolen it or I could have bought it.

  • So if I bought something, I'm the owner of something.

  • Oh, I possess this hangar.

  • I didn't buy it.

  • Don't tell anyone I'm a, I'm a hanger stealer.

  • So this grammar is very, very basic, but oh, I can't tell you the number of times that I have very, very high level, beautifully speaking fluent students to get this basic grammar wrong.

  • So let's go through when we have the subject.

  • I you we and they mean the other people were going to use have and in english because it shows possession, it's going to be followed by a noun.

  • Now, a noun is a person, a place or a thing.

  • But again, because it shows possession, we're usually gonna talk about a thing like a car or a hamburger or a sweater, a camera.

  • You can possess people, but that's a whole different subject.

  • We're not gonna get into that.

  • Um And this is the hard part when we talk about he being another person.

  • She or it, we have to change it.

  • We can't say have, we have to say has and this is where a lot of people make the mistake.

  • I hear people all this time say oh my brother have seven dogs.

  • Oh no no no my brother has seven dogs.

  • Dogs are renowned.

  • And you can put a number in there.

  • So remember if it's he she or it we use has and you might think what isn't it?

  • And it is an inanimate object.

  • But we can talk about things.

  • For example I can say my car, it has air conditioning, thank God because it's so hot.

  • Or my dog has a tail.

  • So we can use it to talk about a singular thing that's not alive or an animal.

  • Now let's look at this, the negative part.

  • The negative in english can be very frustrating because we have to change it again.

  • We have to say I you we or they don't have.

  • So the positive is I have a hangar.

  • The negative is I don't have a hanger.

  • Yeah.

  • And then when we use he she or it we have to say doesn't have so he doesn't have plus a noun for example.

  • He doesn't have a car.

  • So be very careful with this crazy negative but notice we don't have to change the verb which is good here.

  • So the only time we change it, the verb is he she or it in the positive when it's the negative form with he she in it we only change the auxiliary verb doesn't so we say doesn't have let's go through an example.

  • What if I said my sister a jet ski.

  • Okay so remember my sister is a singular person.

  • It's a she so we have to say has.

  • Okay I hear a lot of people saying my sister have a jet ski it's like no no has a jet ski.

  • Perfect.

  • If I wanted to make this negative I can't use has okay be careful.

  • I have to say my sister doesn't have a jet ski which is free confusing butchers remember has doesn't have for he she and it ui we in day we use have and don't have.

  • One other thing that I know is very confusing or just stupid.

  • English is when we use the verb have.

  • So I know for example spanish Portuguese, italian maybe italian.

  • I don't know.

  • Um you would say for example if I translate I have hungry.

  • Mhm.

  • In english you cannot use the verb have, I'm sorry we have to say I am hungry and the reason why is because hungry is an adjective an adjective describes your feeling or your emotion and remember when we use have we're talking about possession or an ownership, we're talking about it now Hanger you have no feelings.

  • So also we do not use the verb have when we talk about age in a lot of languages it's normal to say I have 42 but not in english.

  • We say I am 42.

  • So just be careful with the differences in your languages when to use the verb half.

  • Remember in english it talks about possession, it's mine.

  • So if you want to learn more cool things like this, check out Ingrid dot com and have a wonderful day because we can also use it to talk about a time that's happening.

  • So when an action occurs, for example, I can say she has lunch at seven.

  • I can maybe you think, oh well, Ronnie, I learned she eats lunch at seven.

  • That's okay.

  • But we can also use the verb have here.

  • I can say I have dinner at seven.

  • Yeah, that's a pretty Late lunch there at seven.

  • So she has lunch at seven.

  • So be careful.

  • We can just have to talk about possession.

  • Also when an action occurs, I want you to have a wonderful time and thanks for tuning in to now.

Hi, my name is Ronnie.
