  • Hey, Matt. Can I get your advice on something?

  • Sure, go ahead.

  • What do you think is the most important thing to keep in mind when living in a different country?

  • I would say that you need to be very aware of the differences in communication styles.

  • Could you elaborate on that?

  • Well, from my experience in Taiwan, I know that people tend to be more polite and indirect when communicating.

  • Americans, on the other hand, like to be very direct to get to the point while avoiding criticism and conflicts.

  • I see. So, it's better to not beat around the bush.

  • Exactly. We think it saves a lot more time.

  • I'm not saying the indirect way is bad, though.

  • After all, there's no one-size-fits-all way of communicating.

  • I'm sorry. I'm afraid I don't know what that means.

  • Oh, sorry. It just means that every culture has its own way of dealing with things.

  • Got it.

  • So, how about in the workplace?

  • Is there a general guideline of how I should behave?

  • Just be open, confident, friendly, and direct.

  • You should be an active team player, but also take accountability for the results of individual tasks.

  • When you have meetings or other engagements, remember that punctuality is key.

  • So, always be on time, right?

  • I would guess that any and all discussions should be done efficiently.

  • Yes, you're right.

  • Make sure you stick to the agenda and focus on what's important instead of providing unnecessary background information

  • But if I don't do that, will people get the point I'm trying to make?

  • Actually, once your main point has been established, questions will be raised and that will be the window for you to provide an explanation or more details

  • I see. Well, I think that's all the questions I have at the moment.

  • Thanks so much for your time!

  • No problem. Feel free to talk to me if you have any other questions.

  • I'm curious, though. Why do you want to find out about this?

  • The US office has a new position open.

  • It's a step up, and the pay is great.

  • I'm applying for it.

  • Good luck!

  • I'd be sad to see you relocate, but hope you get the job!
