Subtitles section Play video Print subtitles Hey, Matt. Can I get your advice on something? Sure, go ahead. What do you think is the most important thing to keep in mind when living in a different country? I would say that you need to be very aware of the differences in communication styles. Could you elaborate on that? Well, from my experience in Taiwan, I know that people tend to be more polite and indirect when communicating. Americans, on the other hand, like to be very direct to get to the point while avoiding criticism and conflicts. I see. So, it's better to not beat around the bush. Exactly. We think it saves a lot more time. I'm not saying the indirect way is bad, though. After all, there's no one-size-fits-all way of communicating. I'm sorry. I'm afraid I don't know what that means. Oh, sorry. It just means that every culture has its own way of dealing with things. Got it. So, how about in the workplace? Is there a general guideline of how I should behave? Just be open, confident, friendly, and direct. You should be an active team player, but also take accountability for the results of individual tasks. When you have meetings or other engagements, remember that punctuality is key. So, always be on time, right? I would guess that any and all discussions should be done efficiently. Yes, you're right. Make sure you stick to the agenda and focus on what's important instead of providing unnecessary background information But if I don't do that, will people get the point I'm trying to make? Actually, once your main point has been established, questions will be raised and that will be the window for you to provide an explanation or more details I see. Well, I think that's all the questions I have at the moment. Thanks so much for your time! No problem. Feel free to talk to me if you have any other questions. I'm curious, though. Why do you want to find out about this? The US office has a new position open. It's a step up, and the pay is great. I'm applying for it. Good luck! I'd be sad to see you relocate, but hope you get the job!
