- Hey, what's up Harper Bazaar,
this your boy J Balvin, and we gonna be
spending some time today, so let's go.
(upbeat music)
Let's grab some coffee.
This place actually, I come really often.
Americano, please.
- Decaf?
- Listen, I used to have like six coffees a day.
Then I think it was, like, getting me a lot of anxiety
really being like super hype.
So now I'm just taking one day and I try to do it decaf.
And I also got a broken arm.
That's why I'm, like, so stiff.
So I was in Argentina riding motorcycles.
I lost control and I almost lost my life
but I'm grateful that I'm here and no more motorcycles.
I sold them, you know?
I cannot play.
I'm a dad now
So I can now play with my son.
I order an Americano, that we call in Colombia
(speaks Spanish)
It's Colombian,
it's gotta be amazing, trust me.
That's what a competition
because I have Colombian coffee here and I gotta
acknowledge my people, our Latino gang, our Latino flavor.
And, you know, I'm always about elevate my culture.
It's not just about me as an artist and J Balvin
And it's also about our culture as Latinos.
And right now you check this.
It's like my latest collaboration with Jordan.
It's coming up in September 15.
You wanna check this?
This is crazy.
You have lead lights.
And it's crazy because things
like this never happened before; the first time
a Latino's making a collaboration with Jordan.
And then as an artist, this is my second drop.
You know the the sneaker game's a worldwide,
kind of a religion, you know?.
And I really love sneaker.
Like everything I do, it has to have a purpose or story,
but I have to love it, you know?
If not, it doesn't feel real.
Like a guy from Meddellin, you know that
we are not supposed to be here
and doing collabs like this, you know?
How this dream and not just thinking about me
thinking about the Latinos in general.
Still hot.
(laughing)
Trust me, will melt your mouth.
Still really hot.
This one is really on fire.
If I drink it right now, we can't even talk.
That's gonna be the main thing
in this like still, still hot, still hot.
Still really hot,
but now I can take it, absolutely.
Hey!
(speaks Spanish)
Those are my people, you know?
I used to work painting houses,
so I know how hard that those type of jobs.
Today, we have the AC awards.
I always dreamed to be on the AC awards
because I always loved fashion since I was a little kid.
And this is the first time they did in global fashion icons.
The first time they ever do it.
And I'm the one tonight, because I think fashion
is the way you express yourself without talking.
It's like you go to one block and you see people that seem
that it got stuck in the eighties, you know?.
And then you go to another block
and you see people that are in the 3000's, you know?
So, like, I have a lot of, like, ideas.
Every time I walk in around New York.
(speaks Spanish)
Don't fall, bro.
I remember when I was on my way up, you know,
as an upcoming artist I always wanted to
take a picture with artists.
And one day I was rejected and I know how it feels,
you know?
It feels just like emptiness, when they reject you know?
When you run to have the picture with your favorite artist
and they say no maybe the bodyguard
just like block you thing.
It's not cool because fans
are the ones who really feel us, you know?
The reason why we live the way we live.
I'm really grateful.
I'm really blessed for this day because that's one,
once again, I'm saying it's not just about me,
just a Latino that are representing who we are,
where we come from.
And it is beautiful.
I just wanna make statement.
I wanna make history.
(speaks Spanish)
(techno music)
- I'm ready to get ready. Let's go.
(drum beat)
- [Woman Off Camera] Is this relaxing for you?
- Relaxing?
I mean she not my makeup artist,
she's my friend.
So she do whatever she wants
with, I don't know what she's doing right now.
(laughs)
But it feels relaxing.
- [Makeup Artist] He is not a diva at all.
I just treat him like my baby.
So I clean his face with sparkling water.
So it cleans all the impurities
out the face to prep for makeup.
- Nah, come on, that's not real.
Neither one thing is true.
- [Woman Off Camera] Can you tell us
a little bit about this hairlook you're doing today?
- He did it like what?
four days ago?
- [Barber] Yeah like four days ago
we made the whole tiger print.
- We finally, it's a tiger or zebra.
To me it's tiger.
(meows)
- This is an airbrush gun.
I like to use it for man
because Jose does not like to wear makeup.
- No I don't.
- And finally I got him into something
that he's okay with it.
- Very different now.
We're getting the global fashion icon.
You know, it's like really?
That's amazing.
I love to design also jewelry.
So, like, I try to take little details and everything.
It's so small necklace also fires, you know?
It's just small detail.
Not too loud, just like these earrings.
It's like, I like to rub details.
99% of the time I'm my own stylist.
So it depends how I feel.
And the way I dress right now
is the way I used to dress when I was like 14.
Like, I was baggy mostly of the time.
When I'm the street, baggy pants, baggy shirts, you know?
I just feel comfortable.
So it's all about feel good because when
you wanna be different, you're not different because a lot
of people wanna be different, just be you.
And that's when it makes you bit different
because no one else like you.
So many times I walk in this street, someone just came out
with some wisdom and I'm like, okay, you know
there like was an angel
that came here and dropped me some knowledge.
Today we're going all Dior.
I shout out to Kim Jones, which is one of my friends.
I love you, man.
Different, you know, but not too crazy.
You know, just like
little details with the hat and the bag.
That's a little baggy and long man,
more long than baggy.
And then you see when I put them on: entertainment.
(laughs)
Shoes.
This is the, the final touch.
I'm always trying so many ways,
and then I see which the way I like.
(Reggaeton plays)
(whistles)
(speaks Spanish)
The boss.
The boss is here.
(Reggaeton plays)
- I'm really excited.
And I can say that, that it is something
really important for him.
- Because she had her face.
I'm really excited.
- No, but it's true.
It's really important for him, all about fashion.
Yeah. I use his clothes.
(laughs)
Today, it's just because we have any men
and I need to dress more as a woman,
but I love all his outfits.
- Sneaker pants, jackets.
- Yeah, everything
- Boxers.
- Oh the boxers too, sometimes are too big, the pants,
so I need to pull his boxers.
- Even though the socks.
- Yeah. Everyone is just like: 'You fresh.'
And everyone loves that.
That's why I feel like he deserve it.
(Reggaeton plays)
- [Presenter] Five years ago,
I got a call from my boss's wife.
Happens to be Michael Jordan,
asking me, "Hey, you ever heard of Jay Bavin?".
Michael said, "Hey, what do you wanna do next?"
I said, let's invite him to campus and see
if he can really design. I want wanna see.
He designed this beautiful shoe,
great friends and family.
As a version of Air Jordans 1, the sales guys
were calling me the brand marketing people are calling me.
The president's calling me, begging me for the Air Bavin.
I was like, oh my God, they get it, right?
I was like the Air Bavin 1, which is why tonight
with him here, we want to honor him
for the global star icon for my G, J Bavin.
- What's up my G? You good?
Hi everyone.
I'm so honored,
so grateful to be here, you know?
I'm not supposed to be here, but this one goes
to Columbia because I'm really grateful to be here.
And thank you, Reggie, because you know you've been with me.
You believe in me.
Sorry for, being so annoying, man
but it was worth it.
By the way you know I do Reggaeton
and my music is in Spanish, right?
So that, that means a lot.
It means a lot that our music is in a real global way.
It's not like it used to.
Now it's really global.
So this will go to all the Latinos and thank you so much.
(Reggaeton plays)
Hey, this is like an award. I want to thank you,
I want to thank everybody that is here.
Such a blessing. I'm happy.
Look I have the
global style icon for the first time, global one.
So I'm really grateful.
Shout out to the whole family.
Thank you Harper's Bazaar.
Shout our mom. We did it again.
(upbeat music)
Bye, Harper's Bazaar, love you all, thank you.
I take this home.
