  • But ABC's Rachel Scott leading us off tonight from the convention floor.

  • So here we go.

  • Tonight, Donald Trump officially becoming the Republican presidential nominee for the third time.

  • His sons, Eric and Don Jr., and daughter Tiffany, representing Florida, putting him over the top in the roll call of states.

  • It came just minutes after Trump announced his running mate, first term Ohio Senator, J.D.

  • Vance.

  • And elect Donald Trump in 2024.

  • God bless you, sir.

  • Sources tell us Trump broke the news to Vance just 20 minutes before he told the world.

  • The senator and his wife, Usha, taking a lap today on the convention floor.

  • J.D., J.D., J.D.

  • At 39 years old, Vance would be one of the youngest vice presidents in American history, elected to his first term in the Senate just two years ago.

  • A Marine who served in Iraq, Vance then graduating from Yale Law School.

  • A former venture capitalist, his working class memoir, Hillbilly Algae, a bestseller.

  • Vance once had tough words for Trump.

  • I'm a never Trump guy.

  • I never liked him.

  • I can't stomach Trump.

  • I think that he's noxious and is leading the white working class to a very dark place.

  • But the senator says Trump's performance in office proved him wrong.

  • I was wrong and so many were wrong about Donald Trump.

  • He became one of the former president's most outspoken defenders and a close friend of his son, Don Jr.

  • What are you hoping that he brings to this ticket?

  • The same energy he's brought Republicans in the United States Senate.

  • Over the weekend, hours after Trump was targeted by a would-be assassin's bullet, Vance taking to social media to blame President Biden, saying, the central premise of the Biden campaign is that President Donald Trump is an authoritarian fascist who must be stopped at all costs.

  • That rhetoric led directly to President Trump's attempted assassination.

  • And tonight, President Biden, with his reaction to Vance's selection.

  • He's a clone of Trump on the issues.

  • Trump today making it clear he's counting on the Ohio senator to help him in the crucial Midwestern battlegrounds.

  • Saying, during the campaign, Vance will be strongly focused on the people he fought so brilliantly for, the American workers and farmers in Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio, and Minnesota.

  • So let's bring in Rachel Scott.

  • She is live right down on the convention floor for us tonight.

  • And Rachel, you and I were on the air together when the nomination became official late today here in Milwaukee.

  • You got a chance to be the first person to interview Don Jr. as he was walking down the aisle, helping to put those delegates in place in Florida to put his father over the top for the nomination here.

  • And you asked him about J.D.

  • Vance, and we all know that it was Don Jr. in particular who was really pushing his father to make this choice.

  • Exactly, David.

  • And this campaign is now off to the races.

  • In fact, Senator J.D.

  • Vance's name already being added to the campaign plane right under Donald Trump's name.

  • And here on the convention floor, you have delegates taking out their Sharpies and pens and writing in Senator J.D.

  • Vance on their Trump campaign posters.

  • As for the Trump campaign, they are hoping that Senator Vance helps mobilize as it energizes their base in those critical battleground states, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and of course his home state of Ohio.

  • David.

  • Rachel Scott, we'll see you in primetime right here on ABC later tonight.

  • Thank you for that.
