  • Hey everyone, it's Ben Hardy here and in today's video I'm going to be comparing the new Camry Hybrid to the Sonata Hybrid to see who makes a better hybrid sedan.

  • Before we begin this video I want to give a huge shout out and thank you to the Brent Brown Toyota Enorum for giving me some time with the Camry and then to the Murdoch Hyundai here in Linden for giving me some time with the Sonata.

  • I'll include a link to both their websites in the description down below.

  • Also include a link to my car buying guide as well.

  • So, let's get right into it.

  • So starting with the Sonata we've got a 2.0L 4-cylinder paired to a 6-speed automatic and a hybrid system.

  • Total system output is 192 horsepower.

  • Combined fuel economy between highway and city is 47 miles per gallon.

  • Now popping over to the Toyota we've got a 2.5L 4-cylinder paired to an e-CVT and a hybrid system.

  • Total system output is 232 horsepower with fuel economy being 46 miles per gallon combined between city and highway driving.

  • Before we move forward with this comparison I do want to mention if you want to see more videos just like this then I recommend you subscribe because I post content every single day.

  • So when it comes to design both of them are interesting in their own right.

  • So the Sonata obviously has the giant light bar design there but then you have the actual headlight cluster down below.

  • So it kind of has this aggressive almost like futuristic type look but also what it kind of reminds me of is a catfish in a way.

  • You can see like the big opening mouth right there at the bottom.

  • The Camry has a more traditional style so it has borrowed some style elements from the Prius for the headlights.

  • I think those look pretty sharp and then notice how the front end kind of comes to a point.

  • But yeah let me know which front end you like more I feel like this is going to be pretty controversial in terms of one front end over the other for people.

  • So with the Hyundai our turning wheel setup is 215 by 55 by 17.

  • With the Camry it's 245 by 45 by 18.

  • So completely different setup with the car.

  • So you can see with the Camry it's got kind of more traditional wheels for a car of this size in terms of the design and all that.

  • And then with the Sonata you can see that it's mostly closed off for aerodynamic efficiency.

  • So Hyundai went all out on the aero stuff with this car probably to get that 47 miles per gallon.

  • And then you can see you've got that little kind of piece there.

  • Both of them are interesting with what they have happening with the sides of the cars.

  • I mean look at the Sonata for example.

  • It's got some lines going across and then you can see the trim around the windows and everything.

  • And then it goes from like super boxy to kind of a little bit sleeker in the back.

  • And then the Camry is kind of like race car-ish if that makes sense.

  • You can see with the fenders how those kind of pop out a little bit and then how it's kind of like rounded off around it too.

  • I don't know.

  • It's interesting.

  • Now taking a look at the cargo space in the Camry first off we've got the tabs to fold down the seats and it's pretty big back here.

  • It is pretty dang big.

  • And then it's manual for the closing which is pretty typical.

  • And then popping over to the Sonata, same thing with the seat tabs.

  • It's pretty similar with the storage.

  • They're pretty much the same size in terms of everything.

  • And then this one's actually automatic.

  • Bougie.

  • And then finishing things up with the Camry you can see the little low profile spoiler and then look at the exhaust tips poking out the bottom there.

  • Very sporty looking.

  • And then with the Sonata they've hidden the exhaust tips and all that so they've kind of gone for more of like almost an EV appearance with the back end not showing exhaust tips or anything like that.

  • And then of course you've got the giant light bar.

  • Legroom in the back of the Camry is really good.

  • We've got a little storage pocket here.

  • You can see with the vents and the USBs and all that.

  • And then look at this with the seats.

  • Nice trim down the center.

  • And then headroom back here is pretty good.

  • It does slope a little bit though.

  • Now room in the back of the Hyundai is also really solid.

  • You can see the vents, USBs.

  • Now this Hyundai is a slightly fancier package.

  • You can see fancier seats that come with that.

  • Same thing with like the door panel trim and all that.

  • And then headroom is pretty similar to the Camry.

  • And this leads us to the front of the Camry.

  • Full digital gauge cluster there and I always want to do the door closing because people like to hear what the different cars sound like.

  • But yeah you've got that trim right there.

  • You can see the cloth trim as well.

  • With the steering wheel the controls are pretty straightforward.

  • You've got like adaptive cruise control.

  • You've got paddle shifters there on the back.

  • And seeing the gauge cluster shows you like your current miles per gallon and all of that.

  • And then just a traditional backup camera with this one.

  • Infotainment system is just Toyota's newer unit so it's pretty quick with the response time.

  • It's got like a shortcut bar there.

  • And then down below we've got our controls here for the climate.

  • Focus less on the features and more just how things are displayed.

  • I think that's a better comparison because these packages with these two cars aren't perfect with the comparison.

  • Wireless phone charging pad with some USBs and all of that.

  • You can see the shifter here.

  • And then you've got some storage and we do have some drive modes here.

  • Biggest one is eco mode which is probably what you're going to want to be in.

  • We also have an EV mode so you can drive in electric if you want.

  • Not a ton of range because it's just a traditional hybrid.

  • Pretty big center console.

  • Nice trim on the top.

  • Like this trim that goes across and that kind of design element.

  • And then this one does have a center which is nice.

  • And this leads us to the Hyundai.

  • So like I said the Hyundai is a little bit of a fancier package.

  • First off to the door.

  • Solid.

  • I think this is pretty cool with the door handle design.

  • And Hyundai's new steering wheel logo.

  • Very interesting.

  • But similar to the Toyota, lots of practical controls including like adapter cruise control.

  • The Hyundai does have a column shifter so that's kind of different.

  • It still has paddle shifters there on the back.

  • And you can see with the gauge cluster it shows you all the info that you need to know.

  • And then this one also has like a turn signal camera like I said.

  • It's got some fancy stuff. 360 camera system with this one as well.

  • And then dual zone climate.

  • The camera just had heated seats.

  • This one has heated and cooled.

  • There is a price difference.

  • I'll show that in a little bit.

  • You can see the little charging port area.

  • And then we've got a drive mode select here.

  • So notice we have Eco, Sport, and My Drive.

  • And other than the 12 volt battery reset that I don't know if it's going to pop up on camera right there.

  • There's nothing that I've seen here control wise that lets you do the hybrid toggle.

  • Like you can change the drive modes with this but there's not like a hey I want to go in EV mode with this that I've seen.

  • Let me know if I'm wrong in the comments but I didn't see anything in this.

  • But anyways we've got a pretty big center console.

  • Nice trim all across the dash.

  • And then we've got a big panoramic center.

  • And now that leads us to pricing.

  • So this Sonata has equipped stickers for about $39,000.

  • And then that Camry has equipped stickers for about $36,000.

  • So there's the $3,000 price difference.

  • Let's see which one drives the best.

  • Let's talk about visibility here in the Sonata Hybrid.

  • There's a hood.

  • Both mirrors.

  • Do I have to rear?

  • Column shifter still trips me out.

  • Takes me a minute to get used to that.

  • It's always interesting to hear the sounds that different cars make when they are in electric mode to let people know that they exist.

  • Comfortable seats so far.

  • Oh it looks like they've got a GX550 Overtrail.

  • Finished in that cool sand color.

  • That's pretty fun.

  • That was pretty quick.

  • Smooth.

  • It's interesting that Hyundai does a 6-speed automatic with their hybrids rather than an eCVT like everyone else in this segment.

  • Honda and Toyota to be exact.

  • I will say having a traditional torque converter or actually I think this transmission is actually a dual clutch.

  • I always, man every single time I get stuck on this car it's always like is it a dual clutch or torque converter because I always forget on this transmission.

  • I feel stupid.

  • Anyways, because it's not a CVT or eCVT it's got a level of smoothness to it that those cars don't typically have.

  • That's the point that I'm trying to make.

  • It's nice.

  • It's definitely nice.

  • Let's see what the acceleration is like here.

  • Actually I'll pop it into sport mode first.

  • There we go.

  • Woo!

  • Not bad.

  • Again just like most hybrids not necessarily fast by any means but not bad.

  • I feel like this turns on and off just as much as in a Accord or a Camry.

  • So, Sonata Hybrid.

  • Pretty cool car.

  • What's the benefit of this?

  • Well, Hyundai's got a great warranty so for those of you that are concerned about reliability, warranty!

  • There's my two cents on that.

  • And then compared to a Camry and an Accord, very luxury.

  • That's what I'll say about this.

  • I mean, nice material use throughout, very tight fit and finish.

  • I don't know if you guys listen to the door, when it closes it's solid.

  • You don't have that hollow sound that you get in the Toyota.

  • And it just drives well.

  • It just drives well.

  • It's comfortable.

  • It's definitely more luxury.

  • I'd say that this is the most luxury in the segment when you compare this Camry and to the Accord.

  • So, there you go.

  • That's the Sonata Hybrid.

  • Hyundai's attempt at being Toyota.

  • I think it's a pretty dang solid attempt.

  • Well, let's talk about visibility in the Camry.

  • Let's open the hood.

  • Both mirrors.

  • And let's put the rest of the rear.

  • Well, we're going to reverse out and we will set off in this Camry.

  • Comparing it to the Sonata, this is an interesting comparison because, you know, the two big players in this segment, Toyota and Honda, right?

  • With the Accord and the Camry.

  • The Sonata, it's been around for quite some time, but I feel like people don't pay as much attention to it as they do with the Camry and the Accord.

  • So, right off the bat, it's smooth just like the Sonata with the power delivery.

  • I noticed the rest of the car, the Camry, it's a nice car.

  • It's not quite as luxury as the Sonata.

  • The Sonata feels very solid.

  • Even the door.

  • This door kind of has a little bit of a hollow sound, whereas the Sonata is just solid with the clothes.

  • So, that's a big difference.

  • There.

  • Sorry, I just got to make sure I didn't forget anything at the Hyundai dealership because we are leaving!

  • Huh.

  • I feel like this is powertrain versus car.

  • I'll explain that at the end.

  • Yeah, this is an interesting...

  • It's weird.

  • This doesn't, at the low end, doesn't really feel any more powerful than the Sonata.

  • But I'm sure with the acceleration, this does have more horsepower, so it should feel better with the acceleration.

  • Okay, coming around here.

  • And, punch it!

  • Woo!

  • Yeah.

  • It hits a bit harder.

  • It hits a bit harder.

  • So, something's up with this comparison.

  • Sonata versus Camry.

  • Here's what I'd say is a good way to look at it.

  • With the Camry, it seems like Toyota spent all of the money...

  • I shouldn't say all of the money.

  • A lot of the money on the powertrain.

  • And that makes sense, right?

  • They've been perfecting this hybrid stuff for decades now.

  • Now, I think Hyundai did spend quite a bit on that powertrain.

  • But it feels like they spent more of the time and effort into the car itself.

  • Right into the...

  • Just build quality and the features that it has.

  • And so, I think that's a really good way to look at the difference between it.

  • With the Sonata, I'd say you're getting a nicer car.

  • With the Toyota, you're getting a more proven powertrain.

  • So, you kind of have to decide.

  • Do you want to...

  • Yeah, which one's more valuable to you?

  • Car or powertrain?

  • That's kind of the take on that.

  • They both are going to get good fuel economy and all that.

  • So, yeah, let me know.

  • Sonata or Camry?

Hey everyone, it's Ben Hardy here and in today's video I'm going to be comparing the new Camry Hybrid to the Sonata Hybrid to see who makes a better hybrid sedan.
