  • Tensions are rising in the Middle East, nude photos of cancer patients were hacked, and taking a vacation could help you age more slowly.

  • That's some of what we'll get to on The 7 from The Washington Post.

  • I'm Hannah Jewell.

  • It's Monday, September 23rd.

  • Let's get you caught up with today's seven stories.

  • Number one.

  • Israel's military announced it would launch more strikes on Lebanon.

  • Israel said its fighter jets hit 150 targets in Lebanon this morning.

  • A military spokesman called for residents of southern Lebanon to evacuate or move away from areas where the militant group Hezbollah could be operating.

  • Attacks across the Israeli-Lebanese border have increased since last week.

  • That's when electronic devices, including pagers belonging to Hezbollah, exploded across Lebanon in a presumed Israeli attack.

  • Yesterday, President Joe Biden and U.N. officials called for restraint, fearing that the violence could escalate into an all-out war.

  • U.N.

  • Secretary General Antonio Guterres sat down with Farid Zakaria of CNN yesterday.

  • He spoke about his concerns following the pager attack.

  • So the fact that these things existed means that there is a potential for a much stronger escalation, and that is what concerns me.

  • The possibility of transforming Lebanon in another Gaza, which I think would be a devastating tragedy for the world.

  • Israel and Hezbollah have said they will continue to attack each other.

  • Israel says it will carry on until security is restored to northern Israel.

  • And Hezbollah says it will continue firing rockets until the war in Gaza ends. 2.

  • Donald Trump's campaign has entered a turbulent phase in its final weeks.

  • Trump's top advisers have insisted for months that his 2024 bid for the presidency is the most disciplined campaign he has ever run.

  • They pointed to fewer leaks, less infighting, and a more deliberate strategy.

  • But the past three weeks have revealed a more chaotic side.

  • Whatever self-restraint that helped to launch Trump's campaign has largely disappeared.

  • He was criticized for his debate performance.

  • He has embraced conspiracy theorists.

  • And he even picked a fight with Taylor Swift.

  • This frenetic period for Trump's campaign has come in the crucial final stretch.

  • There are just over six weeks to go until Election Day. 3.

  • The suspect in the potential Trump assassination attempt will appear in court today.

  • Ryan Ruth has been behind bars since authorities arrested him on September 15.

  • That's when investigators say he pointed a rifle through a fence and into a golf course in Florida where Trump was playing.

  • Today, the 58-year-old suspect is expected to appear in federal court for a detention hearing.

  • The judge will review whether Ruth should remain in custody.

  • Prosecutors argue that Ruth poses a flight risk and is a danger to the community.

  • Ruth is facing two federal gun crimes charges.

  • But he could face more serious charges as the investigation continues.

  • He's expected to enter his plea of guilty or not guilty at his arraignment on September 30. 4.

  • Lawmakers agreed to a deal to avert a looming government shutdown.

  • The House and the Senate have until next Monday to beat a shutdown deadline.

  • If they fail to extend funding, the government would shut down on October 1.

  • That's just as millions of Americans will begin early voting.

  • But yesterday, congressional leaders made some progress.

  • They reached an agreement that would extend federal funding until December 20.

  • The deal sets up a frenzied week in Congress.

  • Republicans and Democrats will have to work together to beat next week's deadline. 3.

  • A health system agreed to pay a $65 million settlement after a hack of nude patient photos.

  • That's our fifth story.

  • Hackers stole information and photos of hundreds of cancer patients from the Lehigh Valley Health Network in northeast Pennsylvania.

  • The network discovered the hack last year.

  • And a proposed settlement in a class-action lawsuit was reached earlier this month.

  • It still requires a judge's approval.

  • Eighty percent of the $65 million settlement is earmarked for those whose nude photos were published to the dark web.

  • The episode highlights the risk of cyberattacks and their legal aftermath for health care organizations with especially sensitive information.

  • Some experts say health care organizations have made significant headway in shoring up their cyber defenses.

  • But they remain vulnerable in large part due to their complexity. 6.

  • Asia Wilson and Kaitlyn Clark snagged two of the WNBA's top honors.

  • It has been a trailblazing, record-smashing season for women's basketball.

  • That's in large part thanks to two of the sport's biggest stars.

  • Las Vegas Aces center Asia Wilson was named MVP for the third time yesterday.

  • She joined Hall of Famer Cynthia Cooper in becoming the second player in league history to capture every first-place vote.

  • Last week, she also became the first player in league history to reach 1,000 points in a season.

  • And also yesterday, Indiana Fever guard Kaitlyn Clark was named the Rookie of the Year by the Associated Press.

  • She broke records this season, too, and led the league in three-pointers.

  • But her first-ever postseason game ended last night in a loss to the Connecticut Sun.

  • And she got a black eye.

  • The playoffs continue this week.

  • And at number 7, travel appears to slow the aging process.

  • If you've ever come back from vacation and felt a lot better, or even more youthful, it turns out there may actually be a scientific explanation.

  • Researchers in Australia published a new study looking into how travel affects our health.

  • It found that the positive experiences associated with taking trips actually help to delay the body's decline.

  • When on vacation, people tend to have more social interactions, do physical activity, spend time in nature, and eat healthier cuisines.

  • According to the study, all of that contributes to slowing down the aging process.

  • So go ahead and start planning your next trip.

  • It's the healthy thing to do.

  • That's the show for today.

  • Thanks for listening.
