  • Leadership is the awesome responsibility to see those around us rise.

  • Um, uh, it is a skill, a learnable, teachable skill.

  • Um, uh, and I don't buy into the idea that, you know, are leaders born or made.

  • You know, they're not born.

  • Um, some people are, uh, learn the skill young from experiences or mentors or teachers or coaches.

  • Um, but they develop it.

  • Um, uh, which means anyone can learn to be a leader, uh, at any point in their lives.

  • Um, in the Marine Corps, uh, if you enlist in the Marine Corps, uh, you can't change your mind.

  • You'll go to Paris Island to boot camp or to San Diego to Camp Pendleton, and you signed your contract.

  • Whether you like it or not, you can't quit.

  • They'll make you into a Marine.

  • That's what it says.

  • It says we make Marines when you go to boot camp.

  • If you choose the officer route, if you choose to commission, it's different.

  • It's 10 weeks of grueling training, and the only thing your contract says is you have to do the first four weeks.

  • But for six weeks, you can quit at any time for any reason.

  • No, no questions asked.

  • And the reason is, is the Marine Corps have a belief that the first criterion to being a leader is you have to want to be one.

  • And if you don't want to be one, they don't want you.

  • Because it is an awesome responsibility.

  • It is often thankless.

  • It is often lonely.

  • It is often difficult.

  • And you have to really be up for that kind of journey.
