  • now marks a big opportunity for Indian workers to access one of Europe's big economies, which is Germany.

  • This because Germany is currently facing a workforce shortage due to an aging population and a lack of qualified workers.

  • And to bridge the gap, they are planning to increase the number of skilled labor visas that it grants for Indians by a huge margin.

  • Currently, the cap is 20,000, but Germany is looking to increase this number to the number of days it takes to process a visa filed by Indian candidates, down to two weeks from a much longer nine months.

  • This move benefits nearly 4 lakh people who were affected by long waiting times.

  • This because according to the latest numbers from the German Economic Institute, they have a whopping 5,70,000 job vacancies.

  • This worker shortage is hampering their growth and prompting calls for swift action to attract skilled foreign workers.

  • Germany is known for its engineering prowess and advanced healthcare system.

  • And so to ensure that they don't falter on these fronts and to ensure that they can uphold industry standards, they are hoping to get skilled talent from India in sectors like information technology, nursing and caregiving.

  • They currently don't have bandwidth in a fast evolving IT space.

  • Tech firms are struggling to meet growing digitalization needs and they don't have the expertise needed to keep up right now.

  • And hence the country is looking to India to meet their requirements.

  • In fact, an India-Germany intergovernmental consultation is scheduled to take place later this month, where German Chancellor is set to meet PM Modi to discuss all of this, including strategic partnerships in trade, defence and other things.

  • As per what the German ambassador told Mint, Germany has good experience with the legal migrants from India and they hope to increase these numbers.

  • India and Germany are expected to ink a pact on labour mobility, skill recognition and the ambassador's office has confirmed that this will happen this week.

  • This will be the first agreement under the G20 skills based migration pathways framework, which was agreed upon by the member countries last year in Delhi.

  • It's about the financing of a feasibility study on the development of a global skills framework and part of the joint declaration of intent.

  • The G20 summit is scheduled to take place in Berlin, where the G20 leaders will meet to discuss the future of the G20.

  • We'll have a very, very rich agenda of subjects that will be discussed on very, very many levels.

  • That means that ministers will have bilateral talks to their counterparts, Chancellor will take it up with the prime minister in a bilateral meeting.

  • And then the whole group comes together, the Indian side, the German side, and then they decide on the road map that is rolled out for the next two years.

  • So it's a very important meeting.

  • It's a very granular meeting to a certain extent.

  • We are looking forward to a lot of deliverables.

  • And you'll see end of October, there will be some some very interesting, you know, common projects that will be decided.

  • This mirrors moves by countries like Japan.

  • Japan is also actively seeking Indian talent to drive its economy.

  • In fact, since India has a growing pool of skilled professionals in areas like IT and health care, it has become an important source of expertise for developed economies looking to fill their skills shortages.

  • And this focus on tapping into Indian talent is not just about addressing their short term workforce needs.

  • These countries are looking to foster long term economic and tech collaborations with India.
