A teenage pea-plater on a suspended licence, blasting through a red light, losing control of his car before hitting a four-year-old girl and her grandmother who were walking home at Glenfield.

The 72-year-old woman now in Westmead Hospital with serious head injuries.

Tuesday afternoon on Glenfield Road, traffic comes to a stop at a red light, but a Toyota sedan misses the signal.

Narrowly avoiding oncoming cars, it ploughs onto the footpath.

What happens next, too confronting to show.

A four-year-old girl and her 72-year-old grandmother were waiting at the crossing, the sedan hurling them into the air.

Behind the wheel of the Toyota, an 18-year-old pea-plater on a suspended licence.

Just moments earlier, they can be seen walking up to the intersection, the grandmother clutching a backpack as they make their way home.

Neighbours rushed to help until police and paramedics arrived at the scene.

The roads were so busy and police and ambulance were dealing with everything, there was like traffic controllers.

The impact so severe, the four-year-old girl landed on this tree here, emergency services forced to cut the branches in order to free her.

Miraculously, both survived.

The little girl stable and has been discharged.

Nobody wants to see one of their loved ones put in that situation.

The teenage driver was taken to Liverpool Hospital that has since been released.
