Just like the good old days, hey dad?
Uh-huh.
Smartphones make life easier and I think they're great.
But I just want to see if I can go six days without mine.
And obviously I brought dad because no screen time's kind of our thing.
Where'd you go?
What?
And he can read a map.
For the most part.
Or at least better than me.
We're not worrying.
I have another map.
We're not even using our phones?
No, it's a no phone road trip.
You don't have to tell me how you're doing.
We call it from the hotel.
But maybe I should use better.
Love you.
Bye Willy.
He's shaking.
What?
How do you even hold these things?
Well, you know what?
You open it and then fold the parts that we know we're never going near. I think there will be signs.
Oh honey.
Woo!
We did it.
Okay, I'll get the big bag.
Aww.
That's very nice.
So neither of us...
So neither of us have ever been this far north up the island before.
But our goal is to get to the northernmost tip of it.
And I just learned today that they don't put hotels on maps.
And you just learned that you can't just go like this on the map and make it bigger.
But we've been pretty good at asking people for directions.
Would you know where Goodspeed Road is?
Do you know where Goodspeed Road is?
We'll make it work like we did in the old days.
Yeah, we'll be fine.
But alright, we're surrounded by some beautiful trails.
So let's go for a walk, then go for dinner, and then call mom to let her know we're alive.
She didn't pick up her phone.
Alright, well we tried.
We tried.
Mom says I haven't been snoring lately.
Mom loves you a lot.
Well, I've had a wonderful morning.
I did my meditation.
I wrote in my journal.
I've read my book for a while.
And being an old guy, I don't need an alarm clock.
McCary didn't bring an alarm clock.
And she can't use her phone as an alarm clock.
So I guess for this trip, this old guy is the alarm clock.
So McCary, you ready to go swimming? Okay, so we just finished breakfast.
It was delicious.
And now we're going to go check out some sights.
And the lady at the front desk recommended some waterfalls, which she said would be easy to find.
Okay, follow the road.
Turn ever so slightly.
Okay, that's all I need to know.
Thank you so much.
And after that, we'll find our hotel.
Sounds good.
There's two roads to take, and I took us on the wrong one.
I still want to go to the waterfall though.
Not today.
I think we can.
Come on.
All right, dad.
Day two, no phones.
How are we feeling?
Good.
I'm hopping.
We're going up a pretty steep hill.
Besides that, how are we feeling?
I'm feeling really good.
This is awesome.
This is a good thing we're doing.
Are we happy we did go to the waterfalls?
I'm happy.
Am I right?
I'm happy that it wasn't as far as they thought it was from the parking lot to the falls.
Yeah.
That made me happy.
All right.
I didn't go swimming.
Because of my meds.
Not allowed because of my meds.
Can't get my stuff wet.
We've made it to our second hotel.
It's the cutest little village in the entire world.
No one was here when we got here, but they left a nice note.
So we're not lost.
We're good.
And we still don't need our phones.
The question now is, does this mean 17, 1, or 7?
We're about to find out.
No.
A lady named Brenda had to help us find our hotel room.
But we made it.
And I'm happy to report that we have a bathroom.
We got one of those.
Two beds.
A table.
And a view.
Wow.
My dad's sleeping, so I figured I'd go for a walk.
But I left a note so he's not afraid when he wakes up.
But I did just go to a really cute pottery studio.
And the very nice lady told me that she thinks last call for dinner is in like 30 minutes.
So it's time to go wake dad up, whether he wants to or not.
So when you're smiling right now, you look like you want to punch me in the face.
Do you want to do a pile of it loose?
How are you feeling day two?
No phone.
I'm being honest.
I do miss it.
Yeah.
I'm actually surprised at how I thought we would need it a lot more.
But I think I'm getting better at the maps.
Oh yeah.
No, as far as practical terms, we're doing really well.
Living like the old pioneers.
We're roughing it.
We're roughing it.
Paper, map, maps and everything.
This is your quiet, meditative alarm clock.
Do you feel like you have to act and pretend that you like me when we're filming sometimes?
Shut up.
Thank you so much.
So I just told dad that I forgot to write down the address or check-in details of our next hotel.
But we're on the ferry now and I have full confidence that we'll find it.
Well, because it's only this big on the map.
Easy to find.
Jesus.
We made it.
We're here.
So we've made it to our bed and breakfast and the walls are really thin, so excuse me for talking quietly.
But I'm happy to report that we have two beds, a bathroom, a living area and a view.
Kinda.
We got here way before check-in time, so we ended up walking around the entire island and reading every historical sign that the town has to offer.
And then we went and saw the world's largest totem pole.
I am feeling really content that we've made it this far without our phones.
Really, it's just been a lot of reading signs and pamphlets and asking people for directions and I feel really accomplished by that.
It's just nice.
And, uh, yeah.
But anyway, Dad's in the common area reading his book or something, so I'm gonna go and join him.
Ding, ding, ding.
Ding, ding.
How did you sleep?
It's so dark out.
Good morning.
We're just waiting for the ferry.
And I figured, while Dad's off rereading some historical signs, I would take the time to talk about today's sponsor, which is Skillshare.
As a lot of you may know, I've been working with Skillshare for a few months now.
And when we first started working together, I took a bunch of their drawing classes, like Drawing Skills with Brent Eviston and a Comprehensive Introduction to Drawing by Mimi Chow.
Obviously, I haven't been watching the classes on this no phone, no internet road trip, but I did bring my drawing pencils and I've been practicing my little heart out.
So if learning to draw is of any interest to you, you can get a free month trial to Skillshare if you are one of the first 500 people to use the link in my description below.
I really do recommend the drawing classes because they're great.
But if drawing's not your thing, Skillshare has thousands of other classes in subjects like writing, playing an instrument, painting, and more.
So you should definitely check it out if you're looking to take your career, hobbies, or passion projects to the next level.
Now let's go catch a ferry.
Oh, jeez.
Today's the day, Dad, northernmost tip of the island, two hour drive on a gravel road and then an undetermined length hike to get there.
How do you feel?
Okay, good.
I'm glad you're driving today.
Am I?
No, I'm not.
You are genuinely...
Best friends, insisting that the world keeps turning our way, and our way, it's on the road again.
Be prepared for the unexpected.
Okay.
Oh, yeah.
Yeah, okay.
Uh, straight.
That way.
Okay.
Holy man.
Look at that.
Holy man.
We've made it to the northernmost tip of the island, all without our phones.
Cheers.
Tea.
Very good.
Pretty cool.
There's a lighthouse 21 kilometer hike from here, and that's the real northernmost tip of the island, but...
He's so old.
We couldn't be bothered.
So it turns out it's actually really easy to go six days without a phone or internet, especially with where we were going.
There was actually no cell service or internet anywhere, so it was kind of forced upon us whether we wanted to be off of our phones or not.
But, uh, yeah.
Map reading is kind of hard at first.
Asking people for directions is a little embarrassing, but for the most part, it's super easy and fun.
So, Dad, would you do this again?
Yeah, I would.
It was a lot of fun.
I absolutely would do what we did again.
It was a memory.
We made a memory.
Actually, we made several memories.
It was good.
Thank you.
I think Makira's in the washroom, and I don't think she'll watch this video, but I'm going to do it for myself.
This is the coolest thing that I'm getting to do with my kid.
Um, yeah.
Places we've never been before.
I'm not even sure what to expect each day, but I love my kid, and I gotta thank her for this special trip.
And here's to way more of them.
With her mom, too.
I won't leave her behind anymore.
Bye.
