  • Would you like to practice your travel English or simply join us on a family travel day?

  • Today you'll have the chance to practice more than 50 phrasal verbs and over 50 vocabulary words for traveling as you fly with me and my family from Vancouver, Canada to Montreal on the other side of Canada.

  • My name is Brittany and I'm an English teacher from the United States living in Canada with my husband and our three-year-old son, Dory.

  • On this trip we'll be visiting my son's grandparents and he's very excited.

  • Hopefully everything goes well today and we don't have any flight delays or cancellations or lost bags or illnesses.

  • All of this has happened to us before in the past while traveling with our son and it's not fun.

  • Our travel day actually starts the day before our flight.

  • I'm packing our bags for our trip.

  • I did the laundry and then laid everything out on my bed to pack it.

  • For my three-year-old I'm packing several pairs of underwear and socks, a few pairs of pants, a couple of sweaters, some pajamas, and long-sleeve shirts.

  • To keep him entertained on the flight I'm packing some markers, stickers, coloring books.

  • I'm also packing his headphones and tablet.

  • I always pack a lot of snacks and I mean a lot of snacks.

  • I'm packing a stuffed animal for him even though I know that my son will want to just pack his own backpack himself.

  • I'm considering bringing my son's stroller because it makes it a lot easier for us to navigate the airport with his stroller.

  • However, I would prefer to travel light so I might just leave it at home.

  • I also want to bring my camera equipment with me so that I can film English videos for you guys while I'm traveling.

  • In the description down below you can download the full guide and practice exercises so you don't forget anything that you learned today.

  • The guide will include all of the phrasal verbs and all of the vocabulary words from today's video with a definition and example sentences.

  • Our journey really begins early this morning as we set off for the airport.

  • We go to our bus stop and wait for the bus watching as many cars drive by.

  • It's fall and the leaves look so beautiful.

  • We catch the bus and grab some seats at the front.

  • Dory talks the entire way about how excited he is to go on the airplane.

  • We get to our stop and get off the bus.

  • We put our backpacks back on and head toward the train station where we'll be catching the train to the airport.

  • My son is very excited to take the escalator and holds his dad's hand as he rides it down.

  • The backpack slips off my husband's shoulder and he slides it back up.

  • We are probably carrying too many bags.

  • As usual, we step off the escalator and head toward the trains.

  • We tap our transport cards and walk through the open doors.

  • As we're waiting on the platform for our train to arrive, I show Dory the subway map.

  • He loves maps.

  • Maybe it's a toddler thing.

  • We got to the station pretty early so we have about eight minutes to wait until the next train arrives.

  • Finally, it's here!

  • The doors open up, we get on the train and look for seats that aren't taken, which turns out to be very easy.

  • I'm not sure why there are so many available seats.

  • It's rush hour so I thought it would be busy.

  • We get settled for a short train ride to the airport.

  • The best thing about traveling with toddlers and young kids is that they're so excited about everything.

  • They love life and really live in the moment.

  • It's only the beginning of the day but we already start digging into our snacks.

  • We are always hungry.

  • We have lots of conversations about our plans for the day because toddlers always like to know what's going to happen next.

  • Finally, the airport is in sight and we start getting ready to get off the train.

  • When the train stops, the doors open and we get off.

  • I double check that we have all of our bags with us and that we didn't forget anything on the train.

  • We start heading toward the airport check-in.

  • You can see on the right there are many people at the machines buying their train tickets to go back in the other direction.

  • Dory points out lots of advertisements and artwork because that's what kids do.

  • They notice everything and they like to tell you about it.

  • We walk into the airport.

  • Well, my husband and I walk and our son runs into the airport and we head toward the flight information screens to check that our flight is on time and to find out where our gate is.

  • Dory likes to help us and asks lots of questions.

  • We take another escalator down to the floor where the check-in desks and kiosks are.

  • Dory hops off the escalator.

  • Most of the check-in kiosks are free which is great but we have already checked in online and my husband has our boarding passes on his phone.

  • Since we don't have any bags to check in we can just go straight to the security line and it's a domestic flight within Canada so we don't have to worry about customs and immigration checks today.

  • On the way to the security line a piece of yarn falls out of my hat and Dory thinks it's pretty funny.

  • We walk over to security and Dory makes sure that we all have our passports with us.

  • I don't know about you but I always find going through security to be very stressful.

  • Luckily today it isn't so bad.

  • The workers are kind and helpful and Dory is curious about everything.

  • We place our bags, jackets, belts, phones, and everything else into bins.

  • The bins go through the scanners and we pick them up on the other side.

  • I don't have video of it but Dory really enjoyed going through the metal detector.

  • He thought it was pretty fun.

  • It makes such a difference when the workers are in a good mood and are really kind to children.

  • We make our way to our gate looking at the airport art along the way.

  • Dory likes the toy airplanes on display.

  • He's a bit disappointed that he can't play with them.

  • We get on the moving walkway.

  • Dory has a bit of trouble stepping onto it but he recovers quickly.

  • He walks toward his dad and then decides maybe he'll just stand still and let the moving walkway do all the work.

  • Sadly this airport terminal did not have a playground for kids.

  • Some airports have cute little play areas for kids and it's very very helpful for parents at the airport.

  • We take many breaks to watch the airplanes take off.

  • We go down another escalator.

  • We make it to our gate with lots of time to spare.

  • So we find some seats and we get comfortable.

  • Dory opens up his backpack and plays with his toys.

  • I noticed that our water bottles aren't full so Dory helps me find water fountains so we can fill up our bottles.

  • The thing about toddlers is that they love to help you with anything even if it's not always the most convenient or effective kind of help.

  • Our water bottles are all filled up.

  • Now it's time to eat something before we board the plane.

  • We have a little picnic in our seats.

  • Then it's time to look for the restrooms.

  • We wash our hands.

  • We look in the mirror to make sure there's no food in our teeth.

  • Dry off our hands with a paper towel and throw it in the trash.

  • We head back out to our gate.

  • Boarding has started and the other passengers have started to line up.

  • I look for a trash can to throw a few things away before we board.

  • We wait in line and listen for our boarding group to be called with our passports and boarding passes ready.

  • Finally it's our turn to board.

  • We show our tickets and passports to the gate agent and walk onto the jetway.

  • We walk onto the airplane and say hello to the flight attendant.

  • She's really nice and offers to let Dory sit with the pilot later on when we land.

  • We walk down the aisle and look for our seats.

  • We find our seats, sit down, and get comfortable.

  • We place our bags in the overhead bin.

  • We're getting very excited looking out the window.

  • We put our smaller bags securely under the seats in front of us.

  • Dory eats a snack and reads the airplane safety card.

  • We pay close attention to the safety presentation and buckle our seat belts.

  • We take off our shoes to get even more comfortable.

  • Before taking off, we make sure the tray tables are up and the window shades are open even though it's a little bit bright.

  • We put our phones in airplane mode and it is finally time to take off.

  • Some people get a little bit nervous about this part and need to hold on tight to the armrest or might even need to use the air sickness bag but Dory is just very excited.

  • One really special thing about flying over Canada is that you get to see the beautiful snow-capped rocky mountains.

  • During taxi and takeoff, the seat belt sign is turned on so we have to stay in our seats with seat belts fastened.

  • But once we're in the air and the seat belt sign turns off, I can put my tray table down.

  • It's the perfect surface for playing cars on.

  • My husband and I take turns sitting with and playing with Dory.

  • He's allowed to play with his tablet when we travel so he's very happy about that.

  • I'm a little bit sad because I'm running out of coffee but not to worry because soon the beverage service starts and we all get our drinks.

  • Cheers!

  • I get out more toys for Dory to play with.

  • Play-doh is always a big hit for him.

  • He loves it.

  • And then it's snack time again.

  • While the boys are busy, I take out my sleep mask and try to take a little nap but for some reason I just can't sleep.

  • Maybe it's all the coffee I drink.

  • I go to the tiny airplane bathroom and lock the door.

  • Wow, I'm sleepy.

  • My son is too big now but for parents with little babies there's a table to change your baby's diaper on.

  • Have you ever flushed the toilet on the airplane?

  • It's so loud.

  • I go back to my seat.

  • I turn on the light and try to do a little bit of work.

  • I noticed that our trash was piling up so I turned the air sickness bag into a trash bag to throw our garbage into.

  • The sun is starting to set.

  • We are flying east so it's kind of like forwarding the day.

  • The captain turns off the cabin lights as we prepare to land.

  • Everything goes smoothly and we get ready to get off the airplane.

  • My husband grabs our bags from the overhead bin and we make our way toward the exit.

  • The flight attendants and the pilots ask Dory if he would like to sit in the cockpit and take a picture but he's a little bit overwhelmed and he says no thank you.

  • He takes my hand and we step off the plane onto the jetway.

  • Dory is looking forward to seeing his grandma.

  • Usually at this point we go to the baggage claim area and pick up our checked luggage but not today because we are only traveling with carry-on bags.

  • We walk outside and we look for Dory's grandma.

  • We found her!

  • And he's very very excited.
