  • A day at the beach.

  • Last Saturday, my family and I went on a day trip to the seaside.

  • We woke up early in the morning and packed our bags with towels, swimsuits and snacks.

  • We were all very excited.

  • The drove to the seaside in our car.

  • The drive took about 2 hours.

  • My brother and I played games to pass the time.

  • We counted how many blue cars we saw and sang some of our favourite songs.

  • Finally, we saw the sea.

  • It was beautiful.

  • When we arrived, we found a nice spot on the beach.

  • We spread out our big blanket and put up a sunshade.

  • We changed into our swimsuits and ran to the water.

  • The sea was cold.

  • My brother and I splashed each other and played.

  • We laughed a lot and had so much fun.

  • After swimming, we built a big sandcastle.

  • We used our buckets and spades.

  • We decorated the castle with shells and seaweed.

  • It looked amazing.

  • Mum took a picture of us with our sandcastle.

  • We got hungry after playing, so we sat down to have our picnic.

  • Castle.

  • A castle is a large, strong building, often where royalty or very rich people live.

  • For example, the king lived in a grand castle.

  • To laugh, or laughed, means to make sounds showing happiness or amusement.

  • The joke was so funny that everyone laughed.

  • Lemonade is a drink which is made from lemons, sugar, and water.

  • She enjoyed a cold glass of lemonade.

  • Bucket and spade.

  • You see buckets and spades all the time at the seaside in the UK, and these are little plastic tools used for digging and carrying sand.

  • The children took their buckets and spades to the beach.

  • To count, or counted, as in the story, is numbers in an order, saying or thinking numbers in an order.

  • She counted all the apples in the basket.

  • To decorate, or decorated, means to make something look nice by adding things to it.

  • They decorated the room with balloons for the party.

  • Flavour.

  • The flavour is the taste of a particular type of food or drink.

  • Chocolate is my favourite ice cream flavour.

  • Hiding, or to hide, means staying out of sight.

  • The cat was hiding under the bed.

  • Nearby.

  • If something is nearby, it is close to a place.

  • For example, there is a park nearby.

  • There is a hospital nearby.

  • Shining, or to shine, means to give out bright light.

  • The sun was shining brightly in the sky.

  • Shore.

  • The shore is the land along the of the sea, lake, river, or, well, most water really.

  • They walked along the shore collecting shells.

  • Stones.

  • A stone is a small rock.

  • The beach had lots of stones.

  • Tasty.

  • If something is tasty, it has a very good flavour.

  • The pizza was very tasty.

  • Waves.

  • Waves are the moving ridges of water on the surface of the sea.

  • The waves were high and strong today.

  • Surfers ride the waves of the sea.

  • Lovely.

  • If something is lovely, it is very beautiful or pleasant.

  • She wore a lovely dress to the wedding.

  • Packed, or to pack, means to put things into a bag or a container.

  • For example, she packed her suitcase for the trip.

  • Perfect.

  • If something is perfect, it has no mistakes or flaws.

  • It was a perfect day for a picnic.

  • A rock.

  • A rock is a hard, natural substance made of minerals.

  • They climbed a big rock in the park.

  • Sky.

  • Sky is the space above the earth where clouds and the sun are.

  • The sky was clear and blue.

  • Snack.

  • A snack is a small amount of food eaten between meals.

  • For example, she had an apple as a snack.

  • Supper.

  • Supper is a bit of an old-fashioned word, but we still say it.

  • And supper is always what you eat in the evening before bedtime.

  • They had soup and bread for supper.

  • Towels.

  • Towels are pieces of cloth used for drying things, especially after they are wet.

  • She brought fresh towels to the bathroom.

  • Trip.

  • A trip is a journey to a place.

  • They went on a trip to the seaside.
