He said, like, rub it on your face, rub it all over, rub it on your eyes.
Oh my god, I have makeup on.
You know, I need this hand massage, foot massage, you know what I mean?
So nice.
I've never had a chicken butt before.
I've had chicken wing, chicken feet, chicken heart.
Not the butt, so this is gonna be a first.
I still can't get over how long this piece of eel is.
It's gotta be, like, eight inches long.
I have motion sickness.
All that sushi's gonna come off.
All the way down.
Oh my god, that is too much.
This sushi is gonna... It's gonna stay right where it needs to stay.
I'm not sure there's a single thing better on this planet than coming here and getting a bubble tea.
It is literally the best thing in the world.
Over the last few years, Chad and I have come to visit Taipei several times because this is my family's country of origin, but for the next 48 hours, we're gonna do some activities and experiences that we've never tried before.
So without further ado, let's go and explore Taipei in northern Taiwan.
After about an hour drive from Taipei, we have made it to our first stop of the day, and behind us are a bunch of tea plants.
And they're in rows, and it looks very nice.
We're up in the mountains.
Yeah, so today is gonna be all about tea.
We're doing three stops at three different tea farms.
We're at our very first one.
It just got harvested, so you can't really see the new tea leaves because I was looking closely, and the leaves are very, very thick.
And the tour guide was like, no, no, no, those aren't the ones you picked.
They're way too rough.
But we're gonna be drinking so much tea today, which is good, because I think it'll help with our jet lag and keep us awake.
If you didn't know, I am a huge fan of tea.
I have at least two cups a day.
And so this is a really special treat for me to kind of learn all about the history and the process, especially of the tea here in Taiwan.
And we just learned four things that a really high A-class tea expert would say tea needs.
One, it needs a lot of sunshine.
Two, lots of rainfall.
Three, it needs to be planted on a nice sloped surface.
And then four, it's gotta be in a foggy area.
And if it has all of those things, it's gonna make a really good cup of tea.
It's just so cool to learn about all the things that go into that thing that I drink every single morning when I wake up.
I can't wait to try it, because I also know there's a big process for the brewing of tea.
It's very important.
We just got ourselves a very thorough tea tasting, and we went into this old man's shop.
And he actually reminded me very much of my own grandfather, but he is a tea connoisseur.
He drinks several cups a day, and we got the chance to try three different kinds of tea.
And overall, the experience was really interactive, and it allowed us to use all five senses beyond just tasting the tea itself.
And so something that I thought was really cool was once he served up the tea, we had to flip the tea over and take that warm ceramic cup in our hands and rub it.
Give yourself a little massage.
He said, like, rub it on your face.
Rub it all over.
Rub it on your eyes.
Oh my gosh, I have makeup on.
You know, hand massage, foot massage, okay?
So nice.
It helps you just age better.
Helps keep the skin nice and wrinkle-free, and I mean, his skin looked pretty fantastic.
So I was rubbing it all over, and then you want to smell the tea as well.
This time you can smell.
Ah, very good smell.
It was extremely fragrant and aromatic.
One of the things I loved was watching the tea be brewed, just because as it would come out, it'd be all these different colors.
The oolong tea was like this light chartreuse, I would say.
And then there was another tea that was really special because the small grasshopper eats the leaves, and it changes the genetic makeup of this leaf, and it becomes like this brown tea, and it's so sweet, but they don't add any sugar to it at all.
And the color of it kind of looks like whiskey, and that's like another sense of being able to depict the colors that we see with every single tea that was being brewed.
So while we were drinking our teas, they were telling us like, oh my goodness, you're drinking it way too quiet.
The correct way to do it is slurping it back, kind of like how the Japanese slurp soup to express how delicious they think the meal is.
And so he was saying like, you know, drink it with some noise.
More louder voice, more delicious.
I demonstrate my way.
My father, that's my father teach me.
You suck the tea inside.
Then you can see the voice.
Okay, I demonstrate for you.
Okay, let's go.
That's my father teaching me.
You want to try?
Just the 10%, okay?
10%. 10%.
10%.10%.
The water in front of your teeth, then you suck it inside.
Okay, bye-bye.
Can you hear the voice?
It's beautiful.
太美了
Once you have the tea in your mouth, you're supposed to like aerate it with your- Like let it be in there for a while.
Right, and there's just like all sorts of noises and like they did such a good job of like showing us how to do it.
I don't think I got the technique down correctly.
Gotta practice.
Yeah, I need to practice my tea drinking skills, but that was just a really cool experience overall.
And I was so honored to be able to do it in this man's home and have a fifth generation tea farmer sitting right there in front of us, teaching us how to do it the right way.
We have just made it to Shen Kang Old Street and this township is known for their bean curds and also their tofu, which means they have a really good stinky tofu around here somewhere.
I can already smell it.
We're just gonna follow the, you know, the aromas and go and get us some food to eat.
I'm starving, so I'm really excited.
I asked for stinky tofu and they brought like this tofu looking stew out.
Normally I believe it's like fried, but this looks healthier.
This looks really good too.
It looks very, very good.
Definitely a firm tofu.
Yeah, I like firm tofu.
Let's see if their tofu is as good as they say it is.
Cheers.
Whoa.
Ooh, spicy.
Spicy, yeah.
Very spicy, but it almost tastes like egg.
Yeah, it does.
It's got a bit of stink.
But you're right, like a little bit.
Oh my gosh, so spicy.
It's so funny because the first time I ever smelled stinky tofu, I thought it was so gross.
But now that I've been to Taiwan four times and I've just been around it more, the smell has changed.
It's now like an appetizing kind of smell.
Yeah, you get used to it.
You actually start to crave it the more you have it, in my opinion.
That's it?
I had to make sure that there were bubbles in there.
After eating that very spicy tofu, we were on the search for a bubble tea just to get some milk to help out with the spice.
But now I'm standing in front of a little street vendor that's known for selling chicken butts on skewers.
And our tour guide was saying that it's the best chicken butts in the area.
And I've never had a chicken butt before.
I've had chicken wing, chicken feet, chicken heart.
Not the butt, so this is gonna be a first.
When I was ordering, the lady serving me was like, you know what these are, right?
And I'm like, yes, yes I do.
And I just wonder if there are a lot of Americans who come by and they just think it's regular old chicken.
They don't know it's the butt.
But here we have two skewers, chicken butts.
And what's interesting is it almost looks like there's skin on the outside.
They're all kind of like a diamond shape.
And yeah, they look really good.
Our guide said that they were amazing.
Yeah, they're glistening. Whoa, I'm gonna start with the- Bouncy.
The largest butt on the top.
Big butt.
There's definitely something in the middle, but I crushed it up with my teeth.
Oh, okay.
Chad said that there's a bone in the middle.
And I agree, there is something hard in there, but I completely demolished it with my molars.
I guess it's not a, yeah, maybe it's not a bone.
The flavor is really good though.
Very fascinating.
I need to collect my thoughts on this.
I think it was good, but the bone in the middle threw me off.
But once I got used to it, I decide that I don't think I wanna eat it, but I'm seeing other people that are eating it.
So you can go either way, cause it is soft-ish, but it's just an interesting experience.
I've never had something like it.
The seasoning on it was very good.
And for the value, because it's just over one US dollar, I think it's there, for sure.
Great little afternoon snack or something like that.
Little chicken butt, pick me up.
Yeah, I decided to just eat- That's a lot of chicken butts.
Like think of- Okay, behind the person roasting the chicken butts are probably thousands and thousands of chicken butts on skewers.
I'm like, where did they get all these chicken butts?
Imported in? Definitely not their own chickens.
Next up, we have two desserts.
One of them kind of eases our way into the dessert territory.
This is a, it's kind of like a mochi that has radishes stuffed on the inside.
Haven't had this since the last time we were here in Taiwan.
Yeah, when I saw it, I wanted to get it again.
Look at that beautiful green color.
It's some sort of grass, I think, that they've mashed up.
Outside's a little bit sweet, inside's a little bit savory.
Just an interesting mix of flavors.
It almost tastes like the Chinese supermarket.
You know, like sometimes when you walk through the doors and you can just smell a little something in the Chinese supermarket, that's what this tastes like.
You know what I'm talking about, that smell?
Yeah, like a grandma herb or a grandma- It's Asian grandma specific.
The taste of this is kind of like an Asian grandma herb or like something you'd rub on your body, honestly.
Makes it sound so gross, but it's really good.
For dessert, we have ourselves some brown sugar mochis, my favorite mochi flavor of all time.
It smells like brown sugar and the holidays and just everything wonderful and cozy.
All right, in it goes.
It tastes like a bubble milk tea condensed into mochi form.
So, so good.
好極了
La da da da da.
Mm!
嗯 Mm!
I'm already holding a can.
Claire's always playing these games.
Mm.
嗯 Mm.
Worth the prize.
I think the reason this tastes so good is because we tried the grandma dessert beforehand.
So it makes this one like, oh.
So sweet.
Yeah, pop that fist.
That's, mm.
Don't come to Taiwan without trying the brown sugar mochi.
No one talks about this, really.
Quick pause as we say thanks to today's partner, Level8.
In case you've never heard of Level8, they are an online suitcase company with so many different options.
Claire and I recently picked up for our trip here in Taiwan, these two suitcases.
Claire got hers in champagne and I got mine in black.
They have these flip-out pockets, they're expandable, and it's made it super easy for us to glide through security.
That's typically the thing that holds us up the most when we're traveling.
We always get stopped at security because we have so many different electronics, but being able to access them a lot faster lets us go through so much quicker.
Once we land in a country, we typically like to expand the suitcases just to give ourselves a little bit more room while we're traveling throughout that country.
And if you ever pick up souvenirs, you have that extra room if you need it.
And unlike some suitcase companies that can charge up to $300 or more for their suitcases, these are super affordable, but they're still great quality, which we absolutely love.
So if you're looking for a reliable and affordable suitcase, definitely check out Level 8 because they have a lot of different options.
We also have a discount code for 5% off your next purchase, so definitely check that out if you're interested.
Thanks again to Level 8 for supporting what we do, and back to the video.
So after dessert, we decided that we were still not satiated.
You know, as always, like, you know, how we are.
You know, you know, you know.
So we went to get some sausages in the stand that was right next to the chicken butt stand, and this looks so, so good.
Very fragrant.
We actually have to keep on moving, so we're going to eat our little sausage stick in the car.
We're going to smell it.
We're going to wait.
I know.
我知道
We have to wait for it to cool down, though.
It's still really hot.
Yeah, hypin' hot.
Blow, blow, blow.
It's still so hot.
It's still really, wow, that is sweet.
Oh my gosh, I love the sweetness.
Yeah, I love the sweetness.
It's honestly like dessert.
Yeah, it's really good.
I'm so glad we got that.
Off we go.
出發
See Taipei 101, right over there.
Wow.
哇
We've been going up this gondola ride for about 15, 20, and apparently it's a 30-minute ride.
And as we've been going up, you can see more and more of Taipei, but obviously the most notable feature is Taipei 101 off in the distance.
And I've really enjoyed exploring on this tour just because I haven't seen the city from this perspective yet.
So we're going to go up to Taipei 101, and we're going to go up to the top of the mountain.
And I'm just reminded of how lush Taiwan is.
When we were taking the gondola, we were flying over just these thick jungles and also spotting little swimming pools underneath us.
And up here, there are just so many different kinds of fruits that are growing on trees.
We've learned some fruits that we didn't even know existed. We also passed by this tomb that was for the Cheng family.
And I was like, oh my gosh, I'm from the Cheng family.
And he was just saying like, yeah, it's one of the most common last names here.
And he's like, that's probably one of your ancestors.
And I'm like, oh my gosh.
Great, great, great grandfather Cheng right over there.
Yes, the Zhang family.
That is Cheng in Mandarin.
Good morning, wonderful people.
Today, we are walking to a place that Claire's been excited to eat at for such a long time because she is a huge lover of seafood.
Where are we heading, Claire?
Yeah, so we've been to Taiwan three times this year now.
We tried to come the last two times, didn't get a chance to do it.
And we are heading to Addiction Aquatic Development.
Very, very interesting name, but essentially it is like Chad said, a seafood lover's dream paradise.
You can get anything from sushi and sashimi to grilled or barbecued seafood.
You can also shop around their live seafood market.
They also have a flower shop.
Raw oysters, anything you can think of.
And so we're heading over there now and I'm bringing my appetite.
I love seafood.
This is gonna be such a magical experience for me.
We decided to get their deluxe sashimi.
It looks so beautiful, like a work of art when presented.
Oh my gosh.
This is the fattest piece of tuna I've ever seen.
We're definitely gonna be ordering more.
I think it's a really special experience to be able to see the sushi chefs preparing it right in front of you.
Like it makes it so much more interactive in a way.
I wish I could show you guys, but we're not supposed to film the people here, but there's a whole row of sushi right in front of me.
And they're on these wooden boards that they can just continue to slide down.
The next thing we got is their seasonal nigiri.
And look at the colors.
They're like greens and reds complementing each other.
It's almost so beautiful, I don't wanna eat it.
I know, it's really pretty.
I love this ginger too.
Honestly, I'm really enjoying the process of standing while eating.
So my eyes may have been bigger than my stomach.
We ordered another platter of fish and it looks just so beautiful.
This is the, like this is huge.
Yeah, it's very large.
Look at the length of this piece of fish.
It might be an eel actually.
This is crazy.
Gorgeous presentation.
We had the pleasure of watching them make it right in front of us.
Will we eat it all?
Probably.
We're chatting Claire, we always finish it.
I still can't get over how long this piece of eel is.
It's gotta be like eight inches long.
Ooh.
哦
That was such a delicious lunch and we've now come over to a nearby park.
We were actually passing by some of the workout equipment over there, but we decided we should wait 30 minutes at least after that big meal before we, you know, go and hit the weights.
Hit the gym.
Or the, not the weights, the pull-up bars. The monkey bars and pull-up bars.
But instead, we've come to sit at the stone table and we have a deck of cards.
We're gonna just play some games, digest, and listen to the excitement of those young men over there playing basketball.
I told Chad to go join in on their game, but.
I didn't wanna make them cry.
Really?
Cause you're just such a baller.
Uh-huh.
Nothing but half-court shots.
Half-court?
半場?
Not full-court?
No.
不
Unless it's a full moon.
All right, anyways. It's like a tornado.
Is it supposed to go that fast?
Yeah.
是啊
Try it, just one spin.
I have motion sickness, so I'm gonna, all that sushi's gonna come off.
All the way down.
Very good. That is too much.
I don't want you to get sick, but. This sushi is gonna, It's gonna stay right where it needs to stay.
Well, I don't know if my arms are strong enough.
Oh my gosh, this is really hard.
Well, you haven't worked out in a while.
I can't get it like straight.
Can you?
Oh, well, maybe I'm just really weak.
It is hard though.
You don't have to go in and do that.
Feet together, feet together.
Straight legs, straight legs.
Very good.
非常好
It's so awkward doing it in the park.
It doesn't have to be.
Where everyone can examine your.
Form.
形式
Physical skills.
I'm not sure there's a single thing better on this planet than coming here, this place, and getting a bubble tea.
It is literally the best thing in the world.
We're not even sponsored by Ushulan, this 50-land place.
So good.
好極了
Here you go.
給你
Branding, it's the sticking the, what is this?
Not a spoon. And the cup, the sound.
I did see someone bring their thermos to the counter and they'll fill it in your own cup, which I thought was pretty neat.
Should bring our own cup next time.
I love this place.
I think in another life, I worked here.
I've said this before and I'll say it a hundred times more, but you cannot beat the quality and the tastiness of the cakes here in Asia.
They are extremely light and fluffy.
And after you eat it, you just want more.
Like you don't feel stuffed to the brim.
And this here is a chiffon cake with blueberries and strawberries.
And it's actually very similar to the cakes that I had growing up, you know, for birthdays, for Mother's Day, Father's Day, my family would go to the Asian bakery to pick up these special fluffy cakes.
And these days, my mom actually bakes them from scratch herself.
And so as you can see, gorgeous layers, cream in between each one.
Not my birthday or anything.
I just get to enjoy the cake.
The smell just, ah, smells like a fresh spring day.
The berry forest.
This fork is sadly not long enough to go through all three layers, but I'll do the top two first.
Mm, like eating a cloud.
And there is something really refreshing about fruit cakes.
I've always enjoyed fruit cakes.
And yeah, this brings me right back to my childhood.
We've had so much fun exploring Taipei from the tea to the chicken butts to the bubble tea and the fish.
I really did not know what to expect from this video.
And altogether, it was just so much fun to explore.
