  • My whole life I've struggled with discipline.

  • There was an ideal of who I wanted to be, but I couldn't be consistent in the actions that would take me there.

  • I wanted to be more disciplined, more productive, to really grind for my goals, but these resolutions never lasted more than a week.

  • I used to think discipline was about pure willpower, but no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't sustain it.

  • That's when I realized I was going about it the wrong way.

  • It wasn't about forcing change, it was about forcing the conditions that made change inevitable.

  • I couldn't change myself, but I could change my environment.

  • I can't throw myself into a situation where my back is up against the wall and I have no choice but to change.

  • Think about it.

  • Animals didn't evolve through willpower.

  • They grew adaptations like wings, gills, and stink bombs because they had to adapt to their environment.

  • As much as we hate to admit it, humans are the same way.

  • We don't change unless our environment requires us to.

  • Except what I think sets humans apart is their ability to choose what environment they want to adapt to.

  • Changing my environment in order to change myself is an art I've developed over many years.

  • When I wanted to stop being so lazy and undisciplined, I moved out of the comfort of my parents' basement and into my own place where I had to grind to survive.

  • When I wanted to be more social, I joined classes, clubs, and communities that forced me to communicate more.

  • And now, because I wanted to become a better creative, I moved here to the concrete jungle that is Seoul, South Korea.

  • All of the significant transformations in my life have occurred when I put myself into a situation where I had no choice but to change.

  • By being intentional with what environment you choose to put yourself in, you'll be able to sculpt yourself closer to what you wish to become.

  • You have the power to change your environment, and consequently, to change yourself.

My whole life I've struggled with discipline.
