the only tertiary eye care center in the Amhara region.

And in Gondar we have been working since 2004

and the first project was to develop a comprehensive eye care service

within the existing secondary eye care unit in Gondar.

We have now a very big building

with all the other great necessary infrastructure, equipment,

and creating a child-friendly environment.

Now our objective is to develop a tertiary eye care center

more focused on pediatric ophthalmology. So we have a child-friendly

pediatric eye care department in Gondar, and the main objective of this project is to

continue the reduction of avoidable blindness

particularly in children.

The Amhara region is the second largest in terms of geography or population in Ethiopia.

It is a huge population

so it's a center where a lot of

zones and districts

can come

in Gondar for referral treatment and management,

so it's one of the tertiary eye care centers that

provides training for cataract surgeons, optometrists, ophthalmologists

so it has a huge implication in terms of not only for the Amhara region,

but the whole of Ethiopia.
