In 1964, when the world first saw Marc Beaux and Dee Dee Wood's brilliant choreography for the Step in Time number of Walt Disney's glorious film of Mary Poppins, the number was essentially a fantastic party held on the rooftops of London. Our task for the stage version was to set the number into the expanded story of our show. Mary and Bert introduce Jane and Michael Banks to the mysterious world of the chimney sweeps, who are essentially guardian angels. Mary tells them that these guardians are always there when you need them, ready to step in, to step in, just in time. Take a look at this exclusive performance of the number choreographed by Matthew Bourne and Stephen Mear from our Broadway production. Bert: Look out there! Bert: We will step in Sweeps: Step in time. Bert: We will step in Sweeps: Step in time. Bert: Never need a reason, never need a rhyme Bert: We will step in Sweeps: Step in time. Bert and Sweeps: Over the rooftops, step in time. Over the rooftops, step in time. Never need a reason, never need a rhyme. Over the rooftops, step in time! Sweeps: Watch your step but, step in time. Watch your step but, step in time. Never need a reason, never need a rhyme. What where you step but, step in time Kick your knees up, step in time Kick your knees up, step in time Never need a reason, never need a rhyme Kick your knees up, step in time! Mary: Childhood is a step in time, parenthood's the same Mary and Bert: Never miss a chance to get it right Bert: Don't it seem a perfect crime, don't it seem a shame Mary and Bert: When the steps aren't going, as smoothly as they might. Sweeps: That's when we step in, step in time That's when we step, step in time. Never need a reason, never need a rhyme That's when we step in, step in time. Bert: [spoken] Here we go! All: Link your elbows, step in time Link your elbows, step in time Never need a reason, never need a rhyme Link your elbows, step in time! Link your elbows, step in time! Mary: Just remember when you're low Feeling in the wars Sweeps: Someone's up your chimney Mary: And it isn't Santa Claus! Sweeps: If you need us, if you don't Doesn't make much odds, We'll be watching over you Brushes, brooms, Bert: and Rods! [spoken] All right fellas, I'm going for it! Over the rooftops...
