  • I have to tell you guys about what happened last night on "So You Think You Can Dance"

  • For me, I couldn't handle it. But that will come later.

  • Okay, Let's do this.

  • Hey, it’s Marie Forleo and you are watching MarieTV, the place to be if you want to create

  • a business and a life that you love.

  • Something happened a few weeks ago that made me realize that I have some weird little rituals

  • around money. In fact, the next time I saw my team I actually asked them. I said, “Does

  • anyone else do this thing?” And it sparked a really great discussion.

  • Now, money is a super hot button topic. I don't think I’ve ever met anyone who doesn't

  • have a complex and sometimes tumultuous relationship with it, myself included. However, I’ve

  • realized that over the years some of my weird little money rituals have actually made a

  • huge positive difference in how I feel and how I act around money. Now, a lot of these

  • took root when I was having a really hard time financially, when money terrified me

  • because I was crazy in debt and any time I opened my checkbook I was filled with so much

  • anxiety I could barely breathe.

  • And I believe that these weird little money habits have helped train my brain to actually

  • invite more of it in, to appreciate what I have, and to give more away. So today I wanna

  • share 2 of my weird little money rituals with you that you might wanna try out for yourself.

  • Weird money ritual number one: never say no to honest money. So here’s what I mean by

  • that, the other day I was walking home from a video shoot right here in New York City

  • and I have to say I was pretty fried. I was like toast. My head was down, I had this huge

  • bag on my shoulder, and I’m walking and I noticed a penny. Now, it didn't register

  • at first and I walked a few steps more and then I said, “Woah, wait. That was a penny

  • back there.” So I turned around and I went back and I picked it up. Now, I have to be

  • honest, part of me feels like I should be embarrassed or, you know, I’m picking up

  • money off the street. Isn’t that pathetic? But then, thank goodness, the wiser part of

  • me said, “Screw that, that’s money. I’m gonna pick it up.” That’s because I have

  • a little pact with myself. I never say no to honest money, and that includes Honest

  • Abe.

  • I see you girl, you're trying to pick me up. I like it.

  • I am not too good to pick up a penny or a nickel or a dime or whatever off the ground.

  • And whenever I notice money just laying there, I pick it up and I say, “Thank you. This

  • is awesome.” For me, it’s a reminder that the universe

  • is always there to give me whatever I need and all it takes for me is to be present,

  • to keep my eyes open, and to not be too good for the little things, for, you know, the

  • small blessings. I think there’s also something really humbling about honoring that loose

  • change because, you know, about a billion people in this world live on less than a dollar

  • 25 a day. So to just walk past money, no matter what the amount, seems incredibly arrogant

  • and disrespectful. So you may wanna try this one out for yourself. Never say no to honest

  • money. If you see loose change, scoop it up and say, “Thank you.”

  • Weird money ritual number two: keep your money tight and right, meaning I like to keep my

  • physical money really tidy and organized. Now, you may have heard me talk about how

  • I used to literally wash and iron my money back when I was a kid.

  • You heard of money laundering? This was the real deal. Now, as an adult I no longer do

  • that, but this habit is something I probably picked up from all my years working in restaurants,

  • specifically as a bartender.

  • I never crumple my money. I’ve always gotta have the bills facing in the same way. I have

  • all my fives together, my tens together, my ones together. They are all organized and

  • neat and they lie flat in my wallet.

  • You might think this sounds silly, but for me, keeping my money tight and right is a

  • sign of  reverence and respect. Respect for myself, for the money that comes into my life,

  • and for the money that flows out of my life. I feel like I’m being a good steward of

  • it for the time that it’s with me.

  • This one has zero embarrassment factor since you get to do it in private. And I highly

  • encourage you to give it a go.

  • Now, these two money rituals are super simple, but I’d encourage you to try them and at

  • least see if they make a difference in your life. And if you haven't seen our other episode

  • on 6 money mindset shifts that pay off huge, you may want to check that one out too. It’s

  • really good.

  • Let’s wrap this up with a Tweetable.

  • Money’s like you and me. It’s attracted to respect and appreciation.”

  • Amen, sister
