DREW: Someone who walks! BRANDON: Someone who walks! SEAN: These are all pedestrians, too! TY: Why should you walk? DREW: It's good for me! BRANDON: It's great exercise, BRANDON: it makes me feel good, BRANDON: and it keeps me strong! KATE: It's a fun way to hang out! CYRANI: It's good for the environment! NOLIA: It's relaxing! SOPHIA: It gets me where I want to go! SYDNEI: Do you know how to be a smart pedestrian SYDNEI: when you're walking near the road? KIDS: Yes! TY: Okay, let's see. TY: What should you always be looking out for TY: when you're walking near the road? SEAN: Cars! DREW: Trucks! NOELIA: Buses! KATE: Bicycles! BRANDON: Emergency Vehicles! KIDS: Traffic! SYDNEI: Where should you walk SYDNEI: when you're walking near the road? CYRANI: If there is a sidewalk, CYRANI: I should always walk on the sidewalk. SEAN: It's better to walk on the sidewalk SEAN: because that's where drivers expect to see me. DREW: If there isn't a sidewalk, DREW: I walk on the left side of the road DREW: facing traffic. NOELIA: That way I am facing the cars NOELIA: that are closest to me. NOELIA: I can see traffic better NOELIA: and I'm able to react to it. CYRANI: I don't walk in the road. CYRANI: I always keep a safe distance CYRANI: from the road and traffic. TY: What else should you do to walk safely? KATE: We stay together. KATE: I don't walk ahead KATE: and never run. SEAN: I stay away from busy roads. SOPHIA: I plan a safe route with my parents SOPHIA: and follow it. BRANDON: I make sure younger kids stay near me. BRANDON: I set a good example for them. DREW: I am aware of what's around me. DREW: I don't get distracted DREW: and make sure I have a clear view of the roadway. SYDNEI: One of the most important things you can do SYDNEI: to walk safely near traffic SYDNEI: is to make sure that drivers can see you, SYDNEI: especially after the sun goes down. SYDNEI: What can you do to be seen by drivers? CYRANI: I wear bright colors! NOELIA: I wear reflective materials, NOELIA: and I carry a flashlight or a strobe light! TY: Driveways can be dangerous for pedestrians. TY: What should you do to walk safely across driveways? NOELIA: I watch for cars at driveways. NOELIA: I always look left, right, left NOELIA: and behind NOELIA: to make sure cars aren't pulling NOELIA: in or out of the driveway. SOPHIA: I stop for moving cars in driveways. SOPHIA: I wait until the driver sees me and stops SOPHIA: or until the car passes. CYRANI: I stop for cars with backup lights in driveways. CYRANI: I wait until the driver sees me CYRANI: or until the backup lights go off. SEAN: I stop for cars pulling into driveways. SEAN: I wait until the driver sees me and yields SEAN: or until it is safe to cross the driveway. SYDNEI: It looks like you're on your way SYDNEI: to being a smart pedestrian.
