Electronic Arts has confirmed that a new Battlefield game will be released next year.
During an earnings call for the third quarter of its 2013 fiscal year, EA Labels president
Frank Gibeau said EA "will be launching a Battlefield game next year” and said they
are "very excited to show you guys more detail on that coming soon."
Gibeau didn’t elaborate beyond that or mention Battlefield 4 specifically, though he did
add that “we're not announcing an annualization of Battlefield at this time.”
Annualized franchises are those that see a new release every year. Call of Duty and Assassin's
Creed are good examples.
Now, Battlefield 3 came out back in 2011 and there was no Battlefield game in 2012, so
I'm not sure why EA was even addressing annualizing the franchise.
During the same earnings call, Gibeau did say that last year's Medal of Honor: Warfighter
was a huge disappointment for the company, and the Medal of Honor franchise is being
"pulled out of rotation" for now. Presumably, that means we shouldn't expect any Medal of
Honor games in the near future.
Anyway, back to a new Battlefield.
EA actually mistakenly advertised a Battlefield 4 beta as a pre-order promotion for Medal
of Honor Warfighter on Origin last year.
Later, developer DICE said the beta will be available in other ways and specified that
Battlefield 4 will stay in a modern setting.
So we'll have to wait and see what this new Battlefield game for next year is. E3 in June
is a good time for that. I know a lot of people out there would like Bad Company 3.
As soon as we have more info we'll let you know right here at IGN.
