  • This is our Windows IoT door security prototype.

  • Using facial recognition, it identifies and greets the visitor by name and automatically

  • unlocks the door for them.

  • Now let's dig into the details.

  • The brains of our solution runs on Windows 10 IoT Core running on Minnowboard Max hardware.

  • A standard USB camera is attached to the device's USB port.

  • A monitor and speakers are attached to the device's HDMI out.

  • We use a GPIO pin on the device to control a relay switch.

  • The relay switch, in turn, opens and locks the door lock.

  • The doorbell button is attached to a GPIO pin as well.

  • Finally, we use a cloud-based API, Project Oxford Face API, for facial recognition.

  • So what happens when a stranger approaches the door?

  • You are an unauthorized visitor. The door will remain locked. Please step away from the door."

  • It turns out the stranger was my friend, Mike.

  • Let's add him to my Family and Friends list, so next time he visits the door will recognize him.

  • Here, I take a picture of Mike,

  • And now you can see he is in my Family and Friends list.

  • Welcome, Mike. I unlocked the door for you. Please come in.”

  • Go to windowsondevices.com to find out how you can make projects like this and more.

  • We can't wait to see what you build on Windows 10 IoT core.
