Subtitles section Play video Print subtitles Hello, I'm Andrew Marston and welcome to Tour Japan The show where I tell you about a place in Japan and then we go there. Today we're headed to the Shrine and Temples of Nikko. Now, Nikko isn't exactly part of Tokyo... in fact, it's about two hours to the north. But this season I wanted to include at least one location that would make a great day or weekend trip from Tokyo and Nikko is a great pick. This area of Nikko is a UNESCO world heritage site and many of the buildings have also been designated as national treasures of Japan. And as an added double-bonus the whole complex was built on a mountainside with beautiful nature everywhere. One noteworthy location is the Toshogu Shrine Dedicated to none other than Tokugawa Ieyasu himself. In the history of Japan, Tokugawa Ieyasu was a stand-out leader. It was he who founded the Edo period or as it's also called, the Tokugawa Shogunate. This was 200 years of peace from the early 1600s to the mid 1800s. His shrine in Nikko is one of the most lavishly decorated shrines in all of Japan. And, if you walk up enough stairs, it's also where you can find the tomb where he's buried. So sit back and relax as we explore the Shrine and Temples of Nikko. Hopefully that gives you a good idea of what it's like to travel to the Shrines and Temples of Nikko If you've been, I'd love to hear your recommendations in the comments as well as your suggestions for where we should film future episodes of Tour Japan. Lastly, I have some good news and I have some bad news. The bad news is that this is the last episode of season one of Tour Japan so there will be no new episode next week. But the good news is that season two is definitely happening and I've put information about its release date in the description. So if you like this show, make to subscribe so you don't miss it. Thanks for watching, I'm Andrew Marston. See you next time. You've been watching Tour Japan on the Happy in Japan channel. Click here to watch another episode and subscribe now.
