I loved it. - That was one of our first reaction videos, was to his-- was something with a big yoga ball. - He's actually really funny though. I'm gonna actually go watch him after this. - How can you not love Ryan? He's just amazing. - I love him so much. I'm so happy right now. Yes! ♪ (punk rock music) ♪ - (FBE) All right, so, give us some thoughts about Ryan Higa and his channel Nigahiga. - He is a great YouTuber. - He was-- for a long time, he was the most subscribed to. - He hasn't changed at all and I love that. Watching those just threw me back to elementary school and middle school. - When I was really little, I remember watching How to Be a Ninja, How to Be a Gangster. - It's kind of like the inspirational story of being a YouTube celebrity per se, where he kind of went from, you know, working out of his house to now he's got a major community, a major mass following. - He's one of those YouTubers who just have the quality content. His personality is just so, like-- I'm drawn to it so easily. I think I started watching him-- god, forever ago. - (FBE) So we showed you some recent videos from his YouTube channel, which has over 18 million subscribers. - He deserves it. - (FBE) What do you think it is that has made his channel so popular and also stay so popular? - Because it's always him. No matter what he does, it's still always Ryan. He's able to make everything funny because he just is who he is. - He's funny, that's why. His videos are pretty high production. - He's just super creative. Like, he's one of the most creative people. He always has something that gets me to laugh. - He seems like he's friendly and inviting, and he's funny. - He seems really positive too. - He really puts effort into his videos, and every week it's like a new and creative topic or joke. - He's just talented. He has a knack for it. Sometimes you're just born with the intuition and the talent to do that type of thing. - Well, I like it so much is because you don't know what you're gonna get every week. It could be a question, it could be a parody, a random sketch, it's just always-- who knows? What does he want to do this week? - He's kind of grown and continued that trend of making really, really good quality comedy content that not many people are still doing. Even around YouTube, I can't think of many people that are making comedy videos that come out as good as his, and short skits like that that reach the same level that his do. - (FBE) So Ryan has been around since 2006 with content like lip sync videos. - Everyone started with lip syncing, didn't they? I think Smosh started with lip syncing too. - (FBE) They weren't really made with professional type equipment like many on the internet at that time. Can you talk about what you see is changing for YouTubers over the past ten years? - Oh, yeah, definitely. YouTube used to just be a place where you put dumb videos out. - It's a big platform and it's really cool to see how YouTube has grown-- YouTubers have grown with it. It's a really weird community, but I love it. - Everyone wants to have high production, but no good ideas. Like, it's always-- it's always another challenge of some sort. - More teens are watching YouTube than they are cable television. It gives the creators more money to invest and really make it bigger and better than it was ten years ago. - YouTube is definitely considered a big player in media, so you can't really pass off on YouTube, you know, taking out your webcam and lip syncing to a video because the thing is you're competing now with people who have production teams. - I like the OG YouTube, where you were literally filming on a webcam in a potato, and it wasn't about your production value or how glitzy and glamorous. It's just like, wow, who are you as a person? Some people value production more than the actual content that goes into the production, which kind of makes me sad. - (FBE) Well, it's to the point now that, for a lot of YouTubers and a lot of channels, even for us here, you know, viewers will tell YouTubers that they grew up with their videos, and that's a new thing. You know, you are really the first generation that's been able to grow up with YouTube. How do you think it feels for a YouTuber like Ryan when he's told that someone your age or older grew up watching him? - Probably makes him feel old. - That's gotta be a cool feeling. - Knowing that you've had an impact on somebody's life, and that you've kind of shaped their experience, is definitely a really great thing. - If I was a creator and seeing that, seeing somebody who was eight, watching my videos, and then they're 16 now and they're still watching my videos, I feel like that would make me such a happy person. Videos like-- like, it's what you like, you know? It shapes you as a person and everything. You know, like, me and my friend used to make Nice Guys Finish Last our ringtone for each other, like, all this stuff, and it's just really intense and, like, it just makes me so happy. - (FBE) And, finally, after being around for so long now, what do you think the future holds for Ryan? - He's gonna grow. He's not gonna stop. - Great things, I hope. - He's so talented. I'd love to see him flourish in the industry. - I honestly just think he's gonna keep getting bigger, and keep making great stuff because that's what he's done for fricking forever. - His comedy, like, appeals to so many different people.
