I'm Daron Rahlves with another World Champion Ski Tip, brought to you by Bank of the West. A key part of going fast on the mountain is not just about going straight. It's about making speed in the turns. When you roll your skis up clean at the top of the turn, that's when you make all your speed, going to the fall line. At the top of the turn is when you roll on the next edge. It's right at the top. A big mistake for most people is trying to slide a turn to get your direction set and then set the edge. But you see a lot of racers setting the edge way up high in the turn out of the apex, and rolling in outside the fall line. And that's where you make speed from a turn. It's not about just going straight down the mountain. It's that thought process of rolling a ski on the edge, moving the hips down the hill, and setting yourself up to build a lot of speed into the turn and bringing it out. You can adjust so much by using your legs, pumping your legs off to the side. You're not standing right over your feet. You can get your feet away from you, the more they get away from you, they swing back kind of like a pendulum. That's really when the speed is built. Building speed at the top of a turn is really important because not only does it feel good and it's fun to go faster, it's all about your mental approach and building your confidence on the mountain.
