Hi! It's Bonnie Terry here and we're
talking about phonics today. That is the
second step of the reading process
remember there's five steps. We have
phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary,
and comprehension. So we're talking about
phonics today. Phonics is going to be
that ability to be bringing the sounds
together with the symbols. So, it's the
sound symbol relationship. It's also
called the alphabetic principle.
If I were to give you the /b/ sound,
could you put that together with the
letter B? If I were to say /t/, would you know
that would be the sound that the letter
T makes? So we're matching now the sound
with the symbol relationship. We often
teach this by learning all beginning
sounds. So, over here we have the Sun.
And for the Sun, if I had the
letters in front of me can I pull out
and match the 'S' for that beginning sound.
/s/ The 'S' goes /s/. For Apple, can I bring out the
/a/, the letter 'A', because the letter A
makes that sound. And for table can I
pull out the letter 'T' because table
begins with /t/. So, that's what's phonics is.
It's the alphabetic principle:
the principle of bringing the sounds
with the symbols together and that's
critical for both spelling and writing
as well as reading. For more tips, go to
