Matt Drukker, the portfolio manager of the Fidelity Select Telecom Portfolio saids that "We saw a record-low number of smartphone upgrades in 2016" which could mean this smartphone sales growth this year could be unexpectedly strong. He also says that "...less than a quarter of smartphone customers received an upgrade in 2016, which implies that the average user on a postpaid contract is on pace to keep a phone for roughly four years." Drukker saids that's way too long, and most people are gonna be forced to upgrade this year, because their phones are too old to run the new operating systems and have all the greatest and latest features. And this doesn't just mean more phone sales, it also, when you upgrade your phone, it's a great time to switch carriers. So, it could force carriers to compete even more aggressively for customers in 2017, especially in terms of advertising spending, services packaging, and of course, pricing, which could lead to shifts in market share, and that's today's Fidelity Insight.
