  • -Peace be with you.

  • [footsteps]

  • [enters booth]

  • [creaks]

  • -[breathes deeply]

  • -Bless me Father, for I have sinned.

  • -How long has it been since your last confession?

  • Did you come to confess your sins today, son?

  • -[scoffs] I wouldn't even know where to begin.

  • Looking back--

  • I've done some things I'm not so proud of.

  • I was down a dark road for a long time.

  • -Nobody's perfect.

  • -I guess not.

  • I've used the Lord's name in vain.

  • I've hurt people.

  • Not even like 'an eye for an eye.'

  • I just hurt them, because I could.

  • -Everyone carries anger,

  • but to inflict pain on another human being without cause--

  • That is as much an injury to your soul

  • as it is to the one that you hurt.

  • -It took me a while to understand that.

  • To gain that clarity.

  • -You carry a heavy burden.

  • Something is troubling you.

  • -That's right.

  • -What is it, my son?

  • -I met a girl.

  • -That's good.

  • Someone to share your life with.

  • Someone to share a sacred bond with God.

  • -Yeah.

  • She was a good one too, Father.

  • Beautiful, inside and out.

  • Faithful, loving.

  • And got me off that dark road I was on.

  • -So you're not with her anymore?

  • -She got hurt.

  • -This is difficult for you to talk about, isn't it?

  • -Someone she trusted did something to her

  • when she was just a girl.

  • I keep thinking about this man that hurt her, her uncle.

  • It just doesn't sit right with me.

  • -You need to let this go, son.

  • This anger, it's eating away at you.

  • -I know you're right, Father.

  • That's why I came here.

  • -God is forgiving.

  • You only need to open your heart to him.

  • -I have, Father. After the girl--

  • when it went south,

  • I opened myself to the Lord

  • and he embraced me.

  • My mind keeps coming back to this girl.

  • And it brought back some old memories.

  • Memories I tried my hardest to forget.

  • You know, I belonged to this church as a kid.

  • I haven't been back here since I was twelve.

  • [creaks]

  • -You were a member of this parish?

  • -Yeah.

  • I'm surprised you don't remember me, Father.

  • -I uh, I don't recall. Y-you just said you left as a young boy.

  • So I would not know-- -Yeah, sure, my voice.

  • I'm a man now.

  • -[sighs]

  • -Still, for some reason, I just figured you'd just know who I was.

  • -No, I-I don't. I don't recall. -Yeah, well, think back.

  • Remember I used to help you collect the prayer books at

  • the Sunday sermons?

  • -No.

  • -You used to take me in the back.

  • I used to cry.

  • -W-what are you talking about? Y-you, y-you're mistaken.

  • Y-you're remembering something that didn't happen.

  • I don't know what you're talk-- -I'm not here for my sins, Father.

  • I'm here for yours.

  • [opens booth]

  • -J-Joseph! -Get on your knees!

  • -Joseph, you're making a mistake!

  • This is a false memory, Joseph!

  • -Lie to me again!

  • Confession time, Father. One chance.

  • Did you abuse me?

  • -Yes.

  • -Are you sorry?

  • -Yes, I'm sorry I'm-- -For what!

  • -I'm sorry that I hurt you, Joseph.

  • I'm sorry that I hurt-- -Beg for forgiveness!

  • -I beg you, Joseph! I beg you don't do this to me.

  • Don't hurt me-- -Don't beg me, beg God!

  • -God, please! [subway train passing]

  • Please forgive me for my sins.

  • Please!

  • [train loudens]

  • -God forgives you.

  • -[cries]

  • [sighs]

  • -But I don't.

  • [stabs, grunts]
